Obscure references?

I was raised in Cleveland Ohio, but now live in a small town in Ga. I use words all the time that bewilder people around me. I'm not talking about huge or complex words either. My wife says that's why I have no friends here, but that's just the way I talk. I'm not trying to portray myself as being better than them, or smarter, it's just the way I talk and I can't help it.

^^ Ever since I was a kid, my Uncles would say things like, "Why you gotta use such big words alla time? Why can't ya just say what ya mean?"

My response was, "Because I'm fluent in English." :rommie:

Ok, this one whilst we were examining a partially dissected cadaver. It wasn't immediately obvious on account of the dissection thing, but eventually someone noticed that whoever this guy had been, he was absolutely fucking huge. Someone else asked how he died, and I ventured 'small stone to the head?'

Nobody got it. :(

Ah, the benefits of a Christian education.

I moved from suburban Tulsa to western Kentucky in the mid-80's, and my use of "big words" was always called out. It also sometimes made me a teacher's pet which, of course, made things worse.

Had another reference at work the other day: one of my minions/subordinates came back from leave and I was briefing him on the changes, which included two new hires (one to replace a retired worker). I then quipped "meet the new crew; same as the old crew" and he's one of the few people in the office that could have possibly got that right with "I won't get fooled again".

Words like "minions" are the kind that get me in trouble.
