NX-01 destroyed?

Folks, in what episode(s) did NX-01 suffer complete destruction, or near-complete? I vaguely recall watching one episode in which the bridge had been opened to space and all bridge crew were dead, but not if the entire ship had been destroyed. And recently saw a YouTube clip in which Enterprise was under attack by several Xindi ships and was damaged to the point where multiple hull breaches began sucking personnel out of the ship, but the clip ended before what I presume to be complete destruction of the ship. I'm sure the episodes involved time-travel or other work-arounds to restore the ship/crew at the end, but I'm curious which episodes depicted the ship's destruction or similarly devastating damage. Thanks for nudges in the right direction.

You're probably thinking of "Azati Prime"/"Damaged", where the Enterprise came under attack by the Xindi-Reptilians and Xindi-Insectoids but was saved by Degra calling those ships off.

Or "Twilight", depicting a timeline where the Enterprise crew failed to stop the Xindi superweapon from destroying Earth. 12 years later, the Xindi attacked the last of humanity, but history was reset in the end.

"Twilight" has a great shot where the bridge takes a direct hit and separates from the saucer, with debris flowing. My tv isn't clear enough to tell if any bodies are falling out, but it sounds like something the cgi guys would want to do.

The ship is completely destroyed by the Tholians in "In a Mirror, Darkly" Part I.

In Damage, we can see tiny people floating in space around the ship. I don't remember if they did show any in Twilight. I don't think they did or I would have noticed.

As far as the ship's fate is concerned, I like to think there's wiggleroom in what's said in the finale. There's an NX class in the Fleet Museum, and Troi claims she gets those old ships mixed up. So if (in the admitted unlikely event) there was this big Romulan War TV Movie, all bets could be off whether it's the Enterprise Riker and Troi speak of as being able to visit.

Same deal with the Doug Drexler refit. There isn't actually a shot of the exterior ship in 2161. The three Enterprises montage is artistic licence as a way of signing the episode off.

Wouldn't be the first time something changed, because of an idea that came later. For instance "Relics" and Scotty's line about Jim Kirk getting the old girl out of mothballs, to come looking for him. Doesn't quite gel with having attended the Enterprise-B's launch anymore.

Probably the show you are remembering is "Twilight" which as mentioned before is where we see the bridge blown off and ultimately the ship blow-up.

The NX-01 is the only ship I ever fell in love with.

Me too! I'm not one of those ship nuts, but there's something about this design that really does it for me. I love the yellowish sheen, and the blue glowy bits on the front (which might be the deflector?). Sadly, the models I've looked at on Amazon have the saucer detail too prominent, and lack the copper colouring which I think is so important. (I'd also want one that lights up.)

It's also interesting to consider it as a culmination of progressively changing ship design from TSFS onward (Excelsior, various Ents & Voyager): you can see the designs gradually getting flatter. As a designer pointed out on some DVD extra, the original design is very fragile and vulnerable, with the narrow connections between the main pods. NX-01 is the culmination of the flatness trend, and is also closest in design to the classic flying saucer (part of the original TOS inspiration).

I like the interior, the most believable and functional in Trek.

Also: grappler gun is awesome.

Only thing I disapprove of is the fire extinguishers in the engine room being grey, just like the rest of the decor - not practical!

I know they all :censored: say that the NX class looks too much like the Akira, but why not turn that around: say that the Akira class was designed as a deliberate throwback to the NX design. That's how I interpret it.

That being said: Nit-picking though this may be, I wish the NXes had registry prefixes. I know there's no Federation yet, but there is a Starfleet. They should just use something like UES (United Earth Ship). The mirror version had ISS, didn't it? ;)

How do you feel about the refit version (which adds a secondary hull)?

It was never used on the actual show, although it probably would have eventually.

With all respect to Doug Drexler, who we all love, the refit NX-01 is ridiculous. You don't refit a Starship like that. You build a new one. Much easier to start from scratch than reconfigure every system in the ship. The warp dynamics alone are totally ruined. It makes no sense.

You mean like the differences between NCC-1701 and NCC-1701 (refit)? :p

Apparently there's some development in construction techniques between now and the 22nd century that makes these "why didn't you just build a new one" refits feasible.

But also, I LIKE the NX-01 refit design. I'm not saying it makes sense, but I stopped caring about that so much right around the time they decided they would just go ahead and have phasers, transporters, replicators, holodecks, warp capable Romulans, or TMP style Klingons on the show. So, first episode, really.
