I have been reading for some weeks about the new Picard season being "best Star Trek to date", "classic Star Trek", "what TNG movies should've been"... Okey. I will share my opinion, don't want to hurt anyone feelings and I respect if you like the show. I've been a fan since born and watched TOS, TNG, the movies.... And I don't share that opinions. How can the cheap nostalgia cheat on us to believe this is real Star Trek? A series where first Worf scene is to show him beheading an unarmed Ferengi, where they killed Icheb by extracting it's eyes on screen and it wasn't even the same actor, where Picard is so dumb that he forgot that he put transport inhibitors and they can't be transported, where there is 0 exploration, 0 moral dilemmas about social and futuristic themes that made TNG great. Seasons 1/2 is possibly the worst Star Trek ever made. Season 3 is a continuation of that filled with nostalgia and copied and pasted plots from the classic Trek.

I suppose fans that don't like this series have lost all interest so they don't bother to write about this but someone must do it. Star Trek is run by Alex Kurtzman, a pathetic writer and a mediocre producer with 0 idea about Star Trek. If you think Terry Matalas is the real hope for Star Trek you are very wrong. This season 3 just puts cheap nostalgia every 5 minutes to hide the plot holes, I can't even believe TNG actors accepted to participate on this. And they looks really out of place, Crusher looks really strange after so much surgery, Data looks horrible with so much CGI and make-up trying to hide his age, Picard make-up is really aggressive as well... All looks false and purposely untruthful.

CGI isn't bad at all, but there's people saying it looks better than VFX from First Contact or Nemesis. Omg, I would take all that videogame like CGI to the paper bin and keep scenes like the Zero Gravity from First Contact or Nemesis Space Battle. Even in Insurrection the Enterprise looked much better than any ship on Picard.

I hope all this new Trek is forgotten with time and the only Star Trek that all people remember is Gene-Rick era that finished with Enterprise last episode.

Have a nice day.

I don't love it, but it's a significant improvement over seasons 1 and 2. It's also much better than Discovery.

Star Trek as a franchise feels like its pretty much run it's course. Feels like there isn't much they can do with it that's interesting. It's just a vehicle for nostalgia.

I don't think that will happen. I don't dislike "Picard" in the same way, but I must admit that I'm not that impressed. And I don't see myself engaging in a re-watch of this series.

I think Season 2 is the worst of the three season, but I have similar feelings for both Seasons 1 and 3. Mixed. To be fair, my feelings for "Discovery" are also mixed.

They could do something new. But apparently the fans just want nostalgia.

That seems to be the case with a good number of franchises.

It seems we are living in a period when nostalgia is the easiest way for big studios to keep us spending money on their new shows and movies. I like nostalgia, there are great examples of it in TNG like Relics or for example DS9 Trials and Trible-ations... Sometimes amazing small moments like Bone's scene in Encounter at Farpoint. And so much others. But I find the nostalgia in Picard too exaggerated and as a way to cover the numerous plot holes and all what it has that is untrue to the original franchise spirit. When I watch it I feel like they're trying to force me to like this series. Just an opinion.

I do not like it necessarily but it has every right to exist. Trying to eliminate it is ignoring the value people get from this season.

If the older shows are so great they can endure competition.
I don't want them to disappear, just that they don't replace the old shows as what people will mostly remember from the franchise.

We have no control over that. This is defying a storm. This season pays much in the way of respect and deference to the thing supposedly championed so why is it bad just because it doesn't appeal to all?

The dialogue and direction and acting are top level. But the story and characters (in the case of Beverly Crusher completely unrecognizable) are terrible. It basically is the complete opposite of the Star Wars prequels, which had a very good story but terrible dialogue and direction.

Here's a try from someone that dislikes most of NuTrek but really likes season 3, albeit with some criticisms of especially 307 and 309.

How can the cheap nostalgia cheat on us to believe this is real Star Trek?
Well, that's a... loaded term, but this season is in full continuity with 1966-2005 Star Trek, inasmuch as anything from 1966-2005 was internally.

A series where first Worf scene is to show him beheading an unarmed Ferengi
That Ferengi had incapacitated his asset, Raffi. His first responsibility was to ensuring her safety, not that of an antagonist who was in the process of having her killed.

where they killed Icheb by extracting it's eyes on screen and it wasn't even the same actor
Yes, that's beyond fucked up, and an albatross hanging on season 1's neck.

where Picard is so dumb that he forgot that he put transport inhibitors and they can't be transported
For a couple seconds he couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time. It happens to us all.

where there is 0 exploration, 0 moral dilemmas about social and futuristic themes that made TNG great
Even at a very dark moment, they discover the space dwelling life forms in 304. The Changeling plot point very much reflects blowback from terrorism and Middle East interventionism in an allegorical way. Picard and Crusher debate using biological weapons against the Changeling terrorists, and if killing Vadic while captive to safeguard the safety of their son is justified. None of it is agitprop, partisan to a particular side, or something that will otherwise age very quickly.

Seasons 1/2 is possibly the worst Star Trek ever made
Season 1 is probably the worst Star Trek made that is otherwise in relative continuity with 1966-2005 Star Trek.

Season 2 isn't that that bad. It could be improved greatly with tighter editing and some dialog looping.

Season 3 is a continuation of that filled with nostalgia and copied and pasted plots from the classic Trek.
It is exploring the natural consequences of a Changeling infiltration and a Borg invasion, both of which were possibilities but never fully executed in Berman era Trek.

If you think Terry Matalas is the real hope for Star Trek you are very wrong.
I'm a fan of his work, but like many creators he isn't perfect. But season 3 has incredible attention to detail, bringing many people from the Berman era back. And he himself started off as an intern and PA on DS9 and VGR. So he has real franchise bona fides. Unless you bring back Ira Steven Behr, Rene Echevarria, Joe Menosky, Ron Moore, Manny Cotto etc, Matalas really is the next generation.

This season 3 just puts cheap nostalgia every 5 minutes to hide the plot holes, I can't even believe TNG actors accepted to participate on this. Data in season 1 did look horrible. But in season 3 they find a way that doesn't insult my intelligence to bring him back looking like Brent Spiner circa 2021. There is one flashback scene in season 3 with flawed de-aging. But most of the actors have been incredibly happy with the work on season 3. And they have far more character moments here than in the TNG movies.

My gf is not a big Trek fan and she is enjoying Picard.. I guess shes wrong to do so. Yeah they have thrown in nostalgia. Who cares? Its not like every episode is just a tour of all the old starships. Every Trek series, I have issues with for certain reasons including plotholes.. The crazy thing is, trekkies usually come up with many explanations to explain away potholes. For me personally I ask myself one simple question. Do I enjoy seeing what I saw.. Thats my ultimate barometer.

Feel free to express you opinion, thats what forums are for. But the show must be doing something right. It's trending high on streamers, high imdb score, generating allot of online chatter and word of mouth buzz.

I was going to say something about how the third season of Picard definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, since it does bank hard on nostalgia and one's like of 90s era Trek, but your little comments about McFadden's and Spiner's appearances don't just take the cake, they stuff the cake in a duffel bag and drive it all the way to Mexico. You don't like the season? Don't watch it. World will keep on turning.

It's not easy to watch Season 3 like pretending Seasons 1&2 never happened.

Other people have commented about that without any problem. For me, their appearance is very important to connect with the characters again. And I can barely recognize McFadden. I agree Brent appearance is better as it's more natural than the horrible de-aging from season 1.

I was 20 years old when Star Trek launched on September 8, 1966. I have watched every nanosecond of Trek on TV or movie screen since that day. I hugely enjoyed both seasons 1 & 2 of Picard and am enjoying S3 even more. Why? Because I'm not hung up on some fundamentalist clinging to 1966 or 1987 or any other previous time. Stories and characters carry the day and Picard is loaded with them. Some of what I'm reading here border on religious extremism and there's enough of that crap in the real world. It is sad.
