NFL free agency 2009

I was listening to The Herd yesterday and he made a good point. Second round talent is nearly as good as first round talent, but doesn't require the huge up front dollars to sign them. The #3 pick or whatever it would be would tie up huge cap money on an unproven player.

Plus, its still early in the offseason, lets see what else the Pats have in mind as far as future trades and FA signings.

Pretty much. If the Pats had ended up with #3, they'd have done their best to trade out of it anyway. They're generally happy with the low 20s if possible, although I'm sure they were thrilled with Mayo at the 11th pick or so last year, and could have dealt with that situation again. Top 10 picks are big money, and almost a curse to the teams that get them more than once or twice, like Detroit: hard to trade out of, too expensive to have mor than a couple of those contracts on the roster, etc.

Happy with the rest of the moves so far, and freeing up the cap space has given them room to re-sign several of their needed players so far, so works for me. We'll see where they go from here, but with three 2nd rounders, plenty of options as far as picking players, making trades, trading those picks for higher ones next year, etc.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh to the Seahawks. I guess that means bye bye to Bobby Engram.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. The way the Seahawks burned through receivers last season they may want to accumulate some depth at that position.

^ Well Engram's old and coming off an injury, probably feels disrespected by the Seahawks for not giving him an extension, he wears TJ's number, and if the other WRs are healthy, would he accept being the No. 4 receiver? Unfortunately for him, he has more value to Seattle than any other team.

When players cry about being "disrespected," they usually end up on another team for less money than their current team is offering.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I just don't see it as an automatic decision. Not yet anyway.

Looks like TJ is going to wear his college number, 18. I guess that means bye bye to Koren Robinson then.

John Clayton says Engram is as good as gone still.

Looking at Detroit's action in free agency and what's left on the market it looks like we're a lock to draft Stafford. Dammit.

The Broncos are sure active, signing 11 players including J J Arrington Lamont Jordan. But they're not breaking the bank.

From the Denver Post( it pains me to say that):

No team has been more active in free agency than the Broncos, although the total contractual commitments to the 11 players, including Anderson, is $100.12 million, or about what the Washington Redskins gave $100 million man Albert Haynesworth.

Hahaha or look at the alternative. You can use Daunte Culpepper..........muhahahahahaha

I'd rather do that, draft linemen instead and focus on a quarterback next year. At most, Detroit will have 4 wins next year and end up with a Top 5 pick. Grab a QB next year. We need offensive and defensive linemen more than anything else. Plus, look at Detroit's record with drafting QB. Chuck Long, Joey Harrington...yeah, we rock.

what, no WR in the first round for the 10th straight year?

Don't laugh, I don't care if Michael Crabtree is having foot surgery. Never count us out of drafting a WR. The only thing I fear more than Stafford is another WR.

the broncos got chris simms.
which makes young the number two again..
not happy about this.

i just dont trust him any more.

and as much as cutler whines he never has had a major meltdown during a game and refused to come back in.

any way i am already looking at my work load and trying to see how much it i can clear so i spend time at training camp.

Cowboys released TO tonight. I'm a bit surprised by that one. TO seems to be a cancer where ever he goes. Who would risk going after him now. Probably the Raiders and the scary thing is that might be a perfect fit.

It's a good thing Drew Rosenhaus had his public tantrum where he ripped reporters for saying TO was going to get cut.

TO is going to be a hall of famer but none of the teams he played for will retire his number.

So who signs TO to a one-year contract? Kansas City? Detroit? Cincy?

From Jason Whitlock:

"If wide receivers are strippers, then Terrell Owens is a boob job and a new strip club away from extending his NFL career."

Too true. I'm not sure how their money is tied up, but what about Cincy making a run for him to replace TJ? Can you imagine that? The two biggest divas in the NFL lining up on the same side of the ball?

He probably hasn't worn out his welcome in the AFC yet. I think Dallas made a good move in letting him go.

Making up for the idiotic move when they took him on.
The man is a walking timebomb, an egomaniac and possibly bipolar as well.
Shame really, with all that god given talent...

The Cowboys also released their strong safety Roy Williams, probably because the man sucks in pass coverage and has a knack for horse collaring...

How about opposite Randy Moss? NE is looking for another WR.

I mostly joke, as it'll never happen, but if anyone could "fix" TO for a year, it'd be Billichick. Could make him play on a 1-year "do things right or you'll never work in the NFL again" contract like Moss got a couple years ago, and it would look like Fantasy Football out there. And when TO starts to bitch, he's fired. :guffaw:

I'm sure there's a team that'll be dumb enough to try and do this, though, but without the hard-assed coach and locker room needed to make it work...
