A recent Microsoft patent application reveals that the company is considering work on a device that will project game worlds on to the walls of a room, immersing the player in the environment, similar to a holodeck from Star Trek.
According to the patent, "an immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display."
A Kinect-like camera would detect where the player was standing, and technology akin to the rumoured Kinect Glasses would lend a 3D effect to projections in the room.
"The user may enjoy an immersive 3D experience using suitable headgear, such as active shutter glasses configured to operate in synchronization with suitable alternate-frame image sequencing at primary display and environmental display," reads the patent.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, the holodeck was a sophisticated room, combining force-fields and transporters to create artificial environments that were indistinguishable from the real thing.
Over the course of seven seasons the crew of the Enterprise-D, using the holodeck, visited everywhere from Victorian England to the bridge of the original Enterprise from the 1960s' show.

I want it.

NOW!

I remember seeing something that did exactly that demonstrated on TV many years ago. It even had the 3D glasses.

That's what happens when you have people growing up, becoming researchers and try to make what they liked as kids. Nice! I'd like to use one someday.

In about 50 years we'll get ST TNG type holodeck, and an EJH for cleaning the messes after.........

so it's basically the 'google live glasses', but with projection technology instead of HUD glasses...

ok, i can see where it could be fun... but i'm having trouble understanding how you'd interact with the projections in a real-time environment... you'd need 3 or 4 projectors hooked up to your PC for any real environment, as when you were moving around, you'd block the projection stream from one or two projectors, leaving the image projected on your body lol
