Movies Seen in 2015

It's an interesting premise and Jeffrey Wright is great, but are Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig supposed to be their true Australian/British or American because they seemed to alternate between their accents and faux American ones.

Kidman spends the entire movie running after her children is such a way that she should be screaming "WALLLTTTT!"

Some of the scenes have great ambiance in scenes with the affected, but it suffers from Kidman running for the entire movie and having nothing to do besides that.

I haven't seen the movie, but I heard---don't quote me on this because I just heard it---that they did extensive reshoots after Casino Royale debut to cash in on Craig's popularity. Apparently he didn't have a very big role originally.

I wonder if the reshoots had something to do with it?
 
I just saw Taken 3 today and really enjoyed it.

Much better than part 2 if you ask me. Very entertaining.

A few days ago I also saw Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhal and I thought it was very good overall, but I did have an issue with the ending. Definitely worth a look though!

HP:GoF - I liked this one way more than Prisoner of Azkaban. Several have told me that is one of their favorites in the series. Thus far I have to place GoF as my favorite of the four I've seen. I question a contest where you put teens lives in dangers though? Where the possibility of death is at play and you kidnap their friends and place them in harms way. I'm thinking specifically of the Second Task where Ron, Hermoine and the other two are suspended underwater as the "flag to be captured". My nitpick. These aren't Hunger Games films in a dystopian twisted era afterall.

Dairy/Woman - I've never seen any of the Tyler Perry Madea films and decided it's time to correct that. I'm kind of in a catch up mode now that I'm correcting my Potter oversight. I really, really liked this movie. I can see why it would speak on many levels to a woman of any ethnicity. The way the Charles character is written could be true of any man, with any skin color. He's prideful, arrogant, smug and feels he's untouchable cause he's the bread winner. I make the money, I make the rules type chauvinists. The only scene in that film that I felt was too OTTP was when Madea breaks out the chainsaw in the house. Her antics I felt were believable enough but that one took the cake.

Got it, and juding by Captain Craig's post, that includes older movies? For example, I can talk about The Blues Brothers here if I just saw it for the first time?
 
I just saw Grudge Match too with Stallone and De Niro.

It plays a lot better as a movie than what the trailers made it out to be.

Still, it would've been cooler if this movie came out 15 years ago.
 
Just saw Epic, liked it for the most part. It was pretty fun. B-

Saw Lean on Me via the free HBO/Cinemax preview. It was good, but it seemed a little too neatly wrapped up towards the end of the movie. B+

Fifteen years ago, it would have had to star two other actors. The point of Grudge Match is that it stars two actors we knew were hardcore in their prime, and, while still passably tough, just aren't at the top of their game anymore.

Plus the whole Rocky / Raging Bull angle.

Based on, adapted from, the true story of a beached dolphin tangled in lines who had her tale amputated. A cute film with heart that has a lively cast in Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. I mean, it has Morgan Freeman what else do you need? I enjoyed it and the "real film clips" they show during the credits are a very nice touch. I know Dolphin Tale 2 came out last year but made 1/2 as much so I guess this will not be the next Free Willy saga afterall.

A great mob movie, but I feel that it would have been better if we had seen Ray Liotta's downfall like Al Pacino's in Scarface. I understand that Scorsese wanted to keep the movie moving to show Hill's life spiraling out of control and this movie is a classic with regards to De Niro and Pesci, but it never grabs you into the struggle and eventual downfall of the protagonist.

Paul Thomas Anderson's proven-divisive adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel -- I had initially intended to finish reading the novel before seeing the movie, but it became clear by the halfway point that the novel's plot was really not that important (the movie, due to the paring down of atmosphere and descriptors, arguably makes it more significant, which is commonly the case with adaptations of this sort). Pynchon's book is a comedy, as is Anderson's film, though the way Anderson films it makes it superficially seem more dramatic; it's easy to imagine people mistakenly taking this a lot more seriously than is intended, which I can't imagine being true of the book. This is akin to The Big Lebowski in its parody of Chandler-style detective noir, though without the Coens' meme-inspiring dialogue -- due to the setting and some aspects of the plot, "Chinatown on drugs" might be a better one-line description.

Anyway, I liked the movie on the whole, though I think it's probably a bit overlong for a film, and I'm not quite sure how much rewatch value it will prove to have, compared to Anderson's best films. There's a lot of very fun performances in it. In the leadup to the movie there was a lot of talk about Katherine Waterston (daughter of Sam) as a breakout actress -- while she's very good (and stars in what I can only imagine was Quentin Tarantino's favourite film scene of the year), I don't think she's really in the movie enough for this to be a real breakout part (even if the movie had been better-received as a whole).

1 Guardians of the Galaxy
Rewatch.
A Marvel movie. I found it as good as the first time. The story of the Guardians of the Galaxy and how they come to save Xandar from Ronin was well written. Each of the characters (except Ronin, Nebula and Thanos) were well realized. 8/10.


2 Big Hero 6
A Disney Animated Canon movie based on a Marvel property. I found that this was well realized, especially when it came to Hiro's grieving for his brother, Tadashi. His character was well written. The moral quandaries that he and his new friends face as they track down a new villain in San Fransoyko are also well written. 8.5/10.


3 Alice in Wonderland (1951)

A Disney Animated Canon movie based on the novels by Lewis Carrol. I found this movie, just as strange as I remembered. Especially with the Cheshire Cat causing Alice to provoke the Queen of Hearts (not that she needed it much) into wanting to execute her. The other characters, including the Hatter and the White Rabbit are just as strange as I remembered. 7.5/10.

Rented a couple of more movies from Hasting's durin' my lunch break Monday.

Watched GOU with my sister this afternoon. It wasn't as good as I had hoped. The flashbacks seemed too random, too much talkin' directly at the camera, and I didn't even recognize Lafayette from True Blood. So, I guess that's a good thing.

But, I don't fault Chadwick Boseman. With this and 42 he's shown he knows how to star in a biopic.

I just hope he's as good in Black Panther.

Has to wait for my nephews to call it a night before I could watch DBC. That was a depressin' as hell movie, if there ever was one...

Still, a biopic double feature for the day, though unintentional.

Just in time for the Oscar nominations to be announced, I got the chance to see this, Bennett Miller's third film. After the comparative warmth of Moneyball, he's back to the chilliness of Capote (a film I keep meaning to revisit; it's been about nine years since I saw it). This is a pretty minimalist drama, with the two main characters being men of few words (though their psychologies don't appear that difficult to grasp). Channing Tatum has been a winning presence in comedies up until this point, but Miller pushes his acting to a new level here; if he continues to build on this, he could have a long career indeed. Steve Carell also does impressive work, and he manages to put a surprising amount of nuance into a character whose surface features are fairly unchanging. There's nothing revolutionary here, thematically (it's a companion piece to Whiplash, perhaps, in its portrayal of the costs of striving to be the best; and there's some fairly obvious commentary on the American Dream).

Finally saw Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Really loved it, thought it was the best of the three movies. Well worth the watch and everyone brought their A game. A; 8/10.

4 The Water Diviner
A movie loosely based on a true story about an Australian farmer who tries to find the bodies of his sons who went to fight at Gallipoli. This movie showed the grief and loss of war very well (and also the impact of trench warfare on the unfortunate participants involved). The characters of the farmer and the people he meets during his quest are well realised. As is the situation in the post-war Ottoman Empire. 9/10.

In preparation for it being the next movie of the week over on The Dissolve, I finally checked out the classic 1980s film (perhaps that will be a recurring project this year; I can think of several other such staples I've never seen). It's good, though perhaps I came to it too late to experience it the same way so many others have. The main asset of the movie is clearly Michael J. Fox, who is effortlessly relatable and believable as his character (except in the climactic song performance); but I actually think Fox's performance causes some problems, because pretty much everybody around him is such a caricature by comparison (George McFly, especially).

The almost casual way that Biff's sexual assault of Lorraine is handled is also kind of jarring, from a 2015 vantage (also, that Marty's plan to hook his parents up involves doing the same, though he's unable to go through with it).

1) The Imitation Game (2014) - B

This was a good film but I wouldn't necessarily say it was a great one. Knightly and Cumberbatch do great in the roles but it almost seems a little paint by the numbers. I mean it kind of tells you want this guy did and how he did it but I kinda wish it did a better job showing it, and then we get to the final part of the film and it almost feels like a significant left turn was taken. Still, I enjoyed it and could see Cumberbatch winning best actor.
