Monty Python & The Holy Grail at 50

This bit never leaves my head from Kentucky Fried Movie:

Ah yes, a classic. In my tenth grade English class, a couple students who were big fans of "Holy Grail" convinced the teacher to show it in class. A number of students who were completely unfamiliar with Monty Python found the humor to be baffling, and they were clutching their pearls at the "animal cruelty."

Oh I forgot about that part, but I'm assuming they didn't really launch live cows from catapult.

The cow wasn't real but there were probably cases of sub standard care for the animals used in the film which is sadly common even when The Humane Society are on a film set. A production isn't obliged to have The Humane Society present or even listen to their guidance if they are invited to supervise and it's often just so they can have the line in the credits 'no animals were harmed in the making of this motion picture' but if animals are harmed intentionally or accidentally it's re-worded to 'The Humane Society were present during the making of this motion picture' or something similar. Conditions are a lot better now but there is still a big gap between the standard of care towards the animal performers compared to the human performers.

Horses used to get a very rough deal in movies and trip wires were used to make them fall which often lead to injuries and being euthanised until a trainer taught horses to fall on command so trip wires didn't need to be used.
