MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

^I'm just interested in seeing what happens when someone hits a home run that lands near the construction. What's the over/under on the number of games before a fan is injured trying to get into the restricted spaces to get a ball?

Even in that story it says "everyone knew the decision was driven entirely by service time considerations".

Does anyone really know that? Epstein stated he never started a prospect on day one of a season.

If that's really the case, the service time thing could just be a "bonus" that's being talked to death by the media.

OTOH, Boras is such an asshole, it wouldn't be a bad thing to get an extra year out of a major talent like Bryant.

Boras is an asshole, but considering that baseball owners are consistently looking for every conceivable way to fuck over labor on a daily basis, him doing his best to make sure his clients get every penny they can is a generally good thing.

Boras as an individual has been the biggest boon to players since Marvin Miller.

How Wrigley Field looks today, no bleachers but hey they have a JumboTron. With 3 days before opening, not looking too good.

Well, it looks a lot better than it did even 3 days ago, so I bet you'd be surprised.

I have tickets for Wednesday. Should be interesting.

Personally, because it effects the on-the-field product more I wish they'd done the player facilities and outfield light standards first, but there you go.

(see, I'm not a total mgmt shill)

The MLBPA won its grievance against the Josh Hamilton suspension and he is eligible to resume play immediately. Good. Of course, MLB is already mad as hell about it and saying this is going to come up during the next round of CBA negotiations.

Between Hamilton and Alex Rodriguez, owners trying to get out of bad contracts by abusing the MLB disciplinary system is starting to become a trend, and it is deeply troubling to me.

Wait until you see the owner's quote if you haven't already.

Team president John Carpino: "It defies logic that Josh's reported behavior is not a violation of his drug program."

Aw, poor Angels. You still have to pay that contract you handed out, huh? That's a real tough break, guys. Feel so bad for you.

You know what I say to that? It defies logic that you'd overpay for a player with a history of not only drug and alcohol abuse but also a fairly significant injury history.

I have no sympathy for teams that agree to pay players more than their worth and then take steps to quash said players' value because they've realized (years later) that they made a mistake, nor do I think it's appropriate that they ask someone else to clean up their mess.

I'm looking forward to watching the unwelcome (Rodriguez), the uncontrollable (Hamilton) and the unwatchable (Howard) take the field next week as the Yankees, Angels and Phillies suffer every moment of it.

Oh, and Skip Bayless looks like Beavis.

Angels just need to be patient, Hamilton will most likely hang himself eventually.

I certainly hope he doesn't, because addiction is an ugly, terrible thing. I'm a recovering alcoholic and not a day goes by that I don't briefly think about self-medicating with a bottle. With harder drugs like cocaine and heroin, I can only imagine how much stronger those temptations are. I can only hope Hamilton takes things 24 hours at a time, and if a day gets to be too much, that he just takes things an hour at a time.

I am genuinely bothered by both the Angels' statements and MLB's statements in response to the arbitrator's decision, though. I mean, Carpino's statement basically reads, "We're disappointed that we're still responsible for Josh Hamilton's salary. We were sure this was our way out." I'm really worried that owners are going to demand that the JDA be amended to allow for the voiding of contracts in the event of violations during the next round of negotiations, and I can't quite articulate how much that irks me. (And I'm not so sure that the union with its current leadership wouldn't accept that in exchange for addressing the service time loopholes.)

^Agreed. I don't like Hamilton, but I hope he can get his life back together and keep his addictions under control. As a physician, I'm disappointed by the lack of support the Angels are showing toward one of their players because they're pissed about honoring a contract that was negotiated in good faith.

Josh Hamilton has a problem, but his being pushed aside because the Angels are suddenly worried about the bottom line isn't right; he needs help to deal with his addictions, help he's much more likely to receive if he remains in baseball, in an environment where teammates, coaches and others can watch out for him.

That MLB allows racists like Barry Bonds or lying scumbags like Mark McGwire to have a place in baseball but can't show Josh Hamilton even the smallest amount of compassion because he has a form of mental illness is hypocritical. Unfortunately, it also appears to be a sign of the times.

Total crap response from the Angels, who shouldn't be able to get out of a bad contract by turning on the player. Like the Yankees and Arod, suck it up and enjoy the shit contract you signed; if he was performing, you wouldn't be fighting him.

On the other hand, they DO kinda have a point. You don't want to come down TOO hard because he self-reported, but is there REALLY nothing he violated as part of this whole thing? Seems kinda crazy that you can just go on a bender with coke or whatever, self-report, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. If it was random player X instead of Hamilton, seems like SOMETHING would have come out of it. And not a name-recognition thing, just odd. I mean, if the news today was that Pujols had a crazy weekend and snorted a mountain of cocaine, would you expect a press release about disappointment to be the end of it? I'd expect some sort of suspension or punishment...

Again, he self-reported and said he needs help, so you can't crush him over it (that's what you WANT people to do, so can't hurt them too bad), but still feels like it should be a subset of what would have happened if he had tested positive for it. If it was 100 games for a test, call it 40 and a rehab program or something? I dunno, but it's just an odd result that nothing comes out of it but disappointment

^ Did Hamilton embarrass the team in public? Did he hurt anyone else but himself? Did any of this affect his performance on the field? No? So in the end, why does HE deserve to get punished? He needs help, not sanctions.

I mean, it's not as if he's the first player (in any sport) who went off on a bender. There were some of those guys in the 70's and 80's who were so Animal House-like as to put Hamilton to shame.

I'm really amazed at the lack of support by the team. How's he ever going to come back to that?

On the other hand, still admitted to doing illegal drugs, it wasn't like he admitted to having a glass of wine with dinner. If I came into work and told my boss I did some coke over the weekend, I'd be fired. Doesn't matter if no one got hurt, and I didn't embarrass anyone, and had no effect on my job. We still have a drug policy, and I'd still be screwed.

Well, technically if I self-report vice getting caught by random test, I get to go into a drug program first, but I also lose my clearance, which means I can't do my job anyway, so result is the same.

Again, not saying I want him fired, or the Angels off the hook, just that it's odd to have zero repercussions from violating the drug agreements in place. And especially if random player X would get in trouble for it, but he gets off without punishment because he is known to have a problem with it...
