They've already got a 22+ million dollar 1B, about 3 DH candidates, and a 3B on a long-term contract that has to be considered the primary DH in a couple years; where would Pujols go? Short of trading Texiera, he can't even play anywhere, unless you wanted to see if he can still play LF...
At least in the crazy Pujols to the Red Sox example, you can point to Ortiz's expiring contract as a spot you could actually PUT him. Whether it makes sense to have a 50 million dollar 1B/DH tandem, splitting time with Gonzalez and Pujols, is another issue, but there IS the expiring contracts and positional hole to play the guy.
Actually, it would be a pretty funny experiment, since I don't have to pay the bills. Total waste of money, as Gozalez should be a monster in Fenway and come close to Pujols's overall numbers, and already has the *wink-wink* contract ready to go. And with all the guys coming off the books next year, it wouldn't even raise payroll to give Pujols his 25-30 million. I'd much rather that get put aside for other uses, however. It's just not an automatic "doesn't work" like the Yankees.
On the other hand, guess you could NOT sign Gonzalez to that contract, and get Pujols instead. Or sign Gonzalez, trade him after the season to whomever (Cardinals, Mets, Cubs, pick one), and put Pujols in instead. Taking a big risk that the two in the bush (Pujols) is better than the one in hand (Gonzalez), though.
If he goes to FA after the end of the year, isn't he really the perfect piece for the Mets or Cubs, to spark some life back into the team? Mets have money trouble, but he's fix a lot of the baseball side of things by himself, wouldn't he? Then again, so would forcing the Wilpons to sell the team...
