MLB Offseason 2010-11

They've already got a 22+ million dollar 1B, about 3 DH candidates, and a 3B on a long-term contract that has to be considered the primary DH in a couple years; where would Pujols go? Short of trading Texiera, he can't even play anywhere, unless you wanted to see if he can still play LF...

At least in the crazy Pujols to the Red Sox example, you can point to Ortiz's expiring contract as a spot you could actually PUT him. Whether it makes sense to have a 50 million dollar 1B/DH tandem, splitting time with Gonzalez and Pujols, is another issue, but there IS the expiring contracts and positional hole to play the guy.

Actually, it would be a pretty funny experiment, since I don't have to pay the bills. Total waste of money, as Gozalez should be a monster in Fenway and come close to Pujols's overall numbers, and already has the *wink-wink* contract ready to go. And with all the guys coming off the books next year, it wouldn't even raise payroll to give Pujols his 25-30 million. I'd much rather that get put aside for other uses, however. It's just not an automatic "doesn't work" like the Yankees.

On the other hand, guess you could NOT sign Gonzalez to that contract, and get Pujols instead. Or sign Gonzalez, trade him after the season to whomever (Cardinals, Mets, Cubs, pick one), and put Pujols in instead. Taking a big risk that the two in the bush (Pujols) is better than the one in hand (Gonzalez), though.

If he goes to FA after the end of the year, isn't he really the perfect piece for the Mets or Cubs, to spark some life back into the team? Mets have money trouble, but he's fix a lot of the baseball side of things by himself, wouldn't he? Then again, so would forcing the Wilpons to sell the team...

I'd love to see Pujols as a Met, but I don't know if they could afford him, even without the money troubles. I wonder also what they'd do with Ike Davis.

If you can get Pujols, the rest will sort itself out. Team starts doing well, attendance goes up, so that helps with money to an extent. Tough to sell $10 beers when the stadium is half empty in August.

Actually, with regards to Ike, maybe that's good too? Mets clearly have more than one problem on the team, and if they get Pujols, that frees them up to take their big prospect and make a splashy trade, shore up some of their other problem areas. Play around with that a little, and you've got a little more stable, balanced team with a shot.

^ I don't think they'd get rid of Ike (at least I hope not, since I kinda like the guy). I think they might shift him to second base and get rid of Castillo, who seems to be rather injury prone.

Castillo and Perez are off the books after this year anyway. Besides, I wouldn't take either of them if you gave them to me.

And if they had the chance to get Pujols over some nobody, I'd do it in a second. There's no one untouchable on that team. What has Ike Davis ever done?

That being said, I think the team has their hands tied for the forseeable future until their Madoff mess gets sorted out.

oh, definitely, just pointing out that it would be the kind of shot in the arm the Mets need, and could even put them towards relevent in the NY market again. They cleaned house with the manager and GM, just need to lose the owner to complete that sweep. Either way, the decision making process has GOT to improve with the changes, right? :)

Well, it makes me sad, but also makes me :guffaw:.

Also, the Mets are up against a team of triple amputees and will still lose. :p

Not really on topic, but Brooklyn Dodgers great Duke Snider has died at age 84. :( My mom was a huge Brooklyn fan as a kid.
