Mitchell and Webb & Psychoville

and this episode pretty much proves what ive always thought about " Sir Digby and Ginger" they are just two alchoolic tramps, possibly with mental issues, what is funny about that?
What's not funny about it?
so when you see homeless guys running around drunk in real life, you laugh?
Yes, they are on occasion hilarious. Doing funny things like muttering ominously to themselves, chasing imainary things, and staggering wildly about the pavement... Or maybe no, but this is a TV show, not reality.

Homeless people can be hilarious. One wandered into one of my lectures once and ranted to the lecturer, bottle of cider in hand, about the inequality of 'the system'. Sure, their plight isn't funny, but come on it's not like Digby and Ginger are even slightly realistic.

if the sketchs were funny, I might be inclined to look at them, as if they were just funny, but they are not, so I cant.

It's not just that he's homeless and drunk that it's funny. The joke is that Sir Digby, in his drunk and delusional state, thinks he is a super sleuth with a Nemesis out to get him, and imagines himself and his little world in the style of an old 30s-40s radio serial. If you like, it's similar to Calvin imagining himself as Spaceman Spiff in "Calvin and Hobbes" only it's his childhood imagination that separates Spiff from reality, whereas in this case it's Sir Digby's alcohol-addled delusional status. Plus he has "Ginger" who somehow (through drink, as established in this week's episode) also shares the same world view and acts willingly as his sidekick and dogsbody. Whenever I watch it, I always wonder if their exploits are just a clever front to beg, borrow, and steal whatever valuable things, money, or drink they can find, or if they really do think there's someone menacing them.

It's this combination of surrealism, absurdism, nostalgia, occasional gross-out humour, and use of SnorriCam (although it looks like from this series they're just using a hand-held) that's what makes it funny. That and that he's so poor he can't afford his own opening titles (so he scrawls them on something) or narration and theme music (so he slurs his own narration and hums the theme tune to himself). :guffaw:

It's the Dick Barton music that does it for me everytime! Only slight downer I had was that the drunk rehabilitated who then becomes drunk again after one drink isn't exactly original, but it was great to see them back.

Loved the veggie sketch as well :D

I have just seen the 2nd episode of Psychoville and thought it was a lot better than the 1st episode.
I do not know why but the bit where they are seeing which would be the best way to murder that guy had me lol.

^ No faith in your media center, Bob? :D

I'll be catching up on iPlayer as I'll be listening to the radio, as is my wont.

Actually, I've found a way to get the TV to work now. I might iPlayer Kröd Mandoon later... if I can be bothered.

I'm really loving the insanity of Psychoville. I hope they have more projects (if not a second series) in the works.

Just about to watch Psychoville on iPlayer. But in the meantime, remember....
