Misheard Lyrics

For several years I heard this line in Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel: Silence like a cancer grows as "Silence like a pensive rose". I thought Simon was being poetic or something, I guess.

One of the kids I went to high school with re-wrote "Hello darkness my old friend" as "Hello toilet my old friend, I've come to sit on you again."

One of the guys I knew in the service made a R-rated version of "Devil went down to Georgia."

My ex boyfriend really used to make me laugh when he'd mangle lyrics. He wasn't mishearing, he'd do it totally deliberately, and he'd wait until I was drinking or something on purpose just to make me spit my drink up.

Like he turned the song "Turn! Turn! Turn!" into "Let everything Burn, Burn, Burn, don't need a reason Burn, Burn, Burn", and "Time After Time" became "The Police they can look but they won't find me, Crime after Crime."

In Enya's "Orinoco Flow", it sounded to me like she was singing "save a whale, save a whale", when it was really "sail away, sail away".

And I thought Prince's "raspberry beret" was "raspberry parade".

I always heard that line as "I'm not talkin' 'bout the linen." Which kind of makes sense. Maybe the guy's girlfriend left her sheets and towels at his place.
There was a scene in a movie where Samuel Jackson's character was singing exactly those words about the linen. His mis-singing annoyed the Geena Davis character who was sitting next to him.

By 2:00 in, "tribal dance" starts to sound increasingly like "travel bans".

By 2:40, however, all bets are off.

Always adored 2 Unlimited but never heard of this song until a few months ago. Now, along with "Maximum Overdrive", it's an all-time favorite...

A couple more that were titles as well as lyrics:

Instead of "Vienna Calling" (Falco) I thought they were saying "the anaconda."
Instead of "Heard It in a Love Song" (Marshall Tucker Band), "purty little love song."

These aren't lyrics, but what do you hear?

Yanny or Laurel? Or How about Yaurel? Larry?

I hear both.

One I misheard from Tonight, Tonight, Tonight -- Genesis

What I thought I heard:

I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey
But it's alright
Like a lone running back you can't see
Oh, but it's alright
Try to shake it loose, cut it free
Just let it go, just get it away from me, oh

What the lyrics actually are:

I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey
But it's alright
Like a load on your back that you can't see
Oh, but it's alright
Try to shake it loose, cut it free
Just let it go, just get it away from me, oh

Queen: We are the champions / we are the champions / no time for losers / 'cause we are the champions of the world

I always thought it was: We are the champions / we are the champions / those are the losers / 'cause we are the champions of the world

"Maps" by Maroon 5

Actual lyrics:

Ain't nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
Following, following, following to you you-you-you-you-you
Ain't nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
Following, following, following

What I heard:

Ain't nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
Boing! Boing! Boing!
Ain't nothing I can do
The map that leads to you

Boing! Boing! Boing!

For years I sang it as 'Oom Papa Loompa' in We Are The Champions.
Queen: We are the champions / we are the champions / no time for losers / 'cause we are the champions of the world

I always thought it was: We are the champions / we are the champions / those are the losers / 'cause we are the champions of the world

Also 'Across The Universe' by John Lennon/The Beatles I sang the line 'Jai Guru Dev' as 'Dry Cool Days', which, considering the nature of the song actually kind of works.

I always thought that line sounded like "Jackaroo Dave." Though I wondered what the rest of the song had to do with an Australian ranch hand.

From The Police's Everything you do is Magic:

Actual lines:

I resolve to call her up a thousand times a day
And ask her if she'll marry me in some old fashioned way
But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone?

What I heard:

I resolve to cholera a thousand times a day (a big thanks to Sting and his singing lol)
And ask her if she'll marry me in some old fashioned way
But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone?

For some time I thought the opening line of "Summer of '69" was "I got my first real sex dream".
