Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Movie Reboot Announced

Yeah, the "campiness" or "cheesiness" of Power Rangers is what contributed to it having as long a run on TV as it did and why anyone still gives a damn after twenty years. And besides, Power Rangers has always been first and foremost for kids. It's never pretended to be otherwise, that's where it's gotten its popularity, and where it will continue to get its popularity. Whatever else this movie is, it won't be a darker more serious reimagining aimed at adults like Ron Moore's BSG. Nor would such a move be a wise decision.

So, Orci is on another franchise I enjoy, and one I never imagined he'd ever be able to get his hands on. Why can't he just be content with dragging ST through the mud? I guess the big only question now will be, if Alpha 5 is in the movie, will he be a racist stereotype like the twin autobots from Transformers 2, or will he be more of the "humping the leg" type of robot, also from Transformers 2 :klingon:

He's not even writing the script so relax. You get so worked up over nothing. All the time.

I just wish Orci didn't have to be involved with everything. It gets tiring to see get involved with so many things I used to like. At this point, I'm more than willing to just ignore him, but when he keeps showing up in projects I'm interested in, it gets really hard

FWIW, believe 'em or not, they claim they just wrote the characters, and that the ethnic voices and gold teeth and such were all Bay's doing.

I can see that, since as much as I hate all the movies he's involved in I don't recall any similar racist stuff in movies like ST09, STID or The Amazing Spider-Man. Still, it doesn't really effect anything. I wasn't expecting the PR movie to be super deep, but I was hoping for some interesting, generally likeable main characters and a decent story. Neither of those are things Orci's strengths, unfortunately.

Orci and Kurtzman (almost certainly) have careers because they can churn out setpiece-friendly scripts on a tight deadline, with a positive attitude and a complete willingness to let their producers' desire for new toy showcases and other such practical concerns override everything else.

Setpieces? Toys? Sounds like Power Rangers to me ;)

There you go passing opinion off as fact again.

There you go passing opinion off as fact again.

I'm not going to argue with you. This kind of thing never goes anywhere. I don't like Orci as a film maker, and I don't think he'll do anything positive with his role in making the PR movie based off what I've seen in his other movies. That's the last thing I have to say about his involvement.

^Okay, who would you like to see make the movie if not Orci or Kurtzman? I doubt there are other who will treat it as good or who will want to do it. For that matter, who do you want to see do the Star Trek movies?

I don't want to get into a big discussion. Suffice to say, there are other people in hollywood besides Orci and his cohorts. I'm not too familiar with filmmakers, I really only know them if they're really famous or I really dislike them. People were making good movies before the rise of Orci, and they would be the ones I'd want making Star Trek and Power rangers movies. So, I don't have someone I'd specifically want working on the movie, I'll just say its one of the (probably hundreds) of qualified producers who are alive and worked on Hollywood movies who aren't Orci or friends with him. But, that's neither here nor there. Its not really a discussion for this thread, and I'm not going to derail it. I don't like the man, and he's taken away my enthusiasm for the project. That is really the last I have to say on the matter.

There are? Orci has his hands in so many pies these days, it wouldn't surprise me to find out he is secretly running Hollywood.

Well, aside from the fact the guy sucks at keeping secrets. Were he really running Hollywood he would be acting like a snickering schoolboy suggesting there is some sort of master ruler of Hollywood and that he might know who it is but won't actually reveal it's him.

I have had high hopes for a Pacific Rim style Power Ranger megazord / kaiju fight since first watching Gipsy Danger calling on the power sword.
Now it looks like we may get that. Sweet.

Even though I like most of the stuff I've seen from Orci and Kurtzman, even I have to agree that it is almost getting ridiculous how much genre stuff they are involved in. I'm honestly kind of amazed that one of them is't also involved in SW, and I'm patiently waiting to hear that one of them is doing a Marvel movie. Unless of course DC gets one or both of them first, although I guess now that they've split up we could always get one on each.
And for everyone who thinks everything they do is crap, I would just like to point out that they are responsible for Fringe and Sleepy Hollow.

They both wrote Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Kurtzman is going to directing a Venom spin-off movie set in the Amazing Spider-Man movie continuity. Or were you referring to the MCU, as in the Avengers film continuity? In which case, yeah, I agree, it is odd they haven't been involved in that yet.

Yeah, I meant the MCU, I should have been more specific there. I tend to think of those just as Marvel movies, while the others are Spider-Man movies, X-Men movies, ect.

A couple interesting tidbits from an interview IGN did with Orci:

IGN: Presumably it's not tied to the 21-year of history of the show. Are you going to use the same characters from the original series?

Orci: One of the first things we did was learn and read... They have 600 pages of research that they have on their stuff. We read through the synopsis of everything they did and we are actually taking into account quite a bit of the canon in a real way. We're not just a leave it behind reboot. [Haim] Saban cares very much about that. This is something that he created. I had to go to his house, personally, to tell him, "Listen, I'm your man. Miller and Stenz, these are your guys. I promise you I won't ruin your franchise." And he said, "It's very important to me, because kids around the world know what the Power Rangers are. So you can't just come in here and walk all over it. It better be consistent with what I've been doing." And I said, "Yes sir!"

Ok, so it's supposedly not going top be a complete reinvention from scratch. But then there's this:

IGN: Oh, so then does it does exist within the continuity of the TV show?

Orci: It's got a continuity within the world. I can't tell you what, but it does have a continuity.

It sounds like he's suggesting that it's in some way connected to the existing continuity. Hmm, a (supposed) reboot that Orci is involved with that is still connected to previously existing continuity... sounds familiar. ;)

I'm not asking for BSG-level grit.

More like Marvel's Avengers or such.

I want a PG-13 film that can successfully attract an audience whose voices have changed, at the minimum.

And since there is 20 years of TV show that doesn't do that, maybe a movie like this should?

The kids will always have the show. Past and future.

Lets make the movies enjoyable for people who can't order off the kids menu at a restaurant, while still being safe for said younger crowd.

But at the same time, why mess with a formula that works? Power Rangers makes its money by aiming at the kiddie crowd. That's where the money's been coming from the last twenty years, that's the safe bet.

Here's a list of a few other films set to be released in July 2016.

July 1st - Angry Birds
July 1st - Independence Day 2
July 1st - Tarzan
July 8th - Doctor Strange
July 15th -The Bourne Betrayal
July 15th - Ice Age 5
July 22nd - King Arthur
July 29th - Third Planet of the Apes film

May the power be with you, Rangers. You'll need it.

Roberto Orci has dropped out of the movie, due to scheduling conflicts (Star Trek 3, of course).

Deadline

I wonder who they'll get to replace him.
