Metalhead Trekkies?

Metal and hard rock generally yes. Obviously a fan of the classics, Anthrax, Metallica, Maiden, Pantera, Therapy?, from my youth. And I like lots of bands that cross over into metal like Faith No More. I buy all new releases by all the ones that are still going. I tend to stick with bands for life, although I don't enjoy them as much as their older material, in most cases. Anthrax are an exception though, they have really been solid in all incarnations from the mid-80s right up til now. Loads of good material, and loads of proper tunes on the new stuff.

I like some of the bands that came along in the 90s, Deftones for instance I think are brilliant and have just gone from strength to strength. But in general al lot of the bands that were considered "nu metal" I did not like that much. Not to say I thought they were bad, but not my cup of tea.

Don't listen to a huge amount of modern metal, but my girlfriend has really got me into Unleash The Archers recently.

Unleash The Archers is a really awesome band. :mallory:

Yeah, they just get better with every album as well. This new one is blowing my mind, the musicianship, and the tune writing skill, they really nailed it.

We are listening to Korpiklaani a lot as well, I recommend them if you like more folk based metal. They rock hard though.

When I was a kid, metal was Purple/Zep/Sabs and similar.

As metal got heavier, it lost me. Double kicks seemed over-busy (though technically brilliant), and I have no time for screamo/cookie monster vocals. But symphonic metal seems to be my jam.

Back in the earlier 2000s I started getting into Nightwish, and heard about the dsrama moving from first vocalist to second. Then suddenly second vocalist was out in the middle of a tour, and the third vocalist had to learn the set in 48 hours, Fortunately she's an exceptional vocalist, but at the time I heard a couple of songs from her previous band ReVox, which was growly, thought it was a shame, and dropped them.

Fast forward to last year, and I've been watching a lot of reaction vids on YT, it's great watching them, seeing kids getting into the songs I discovered back in the day, and how much they love them. Anyway, I kept seeing them react to 'Ghost Love Score' live from 7 years ago, heaps of them, and I decided to check it out for myself.

The band's exceptional musicianship was apparent right from the first notes, and then... Floor Jansen came out with that voice. Holy shit! It was a deep plunge into the rabbit hole then, not just for songs from the last 7 years but other reactions too. Like many people, I find their music very uplifting without being spiritual, and the energy that comes off each vid propels me through the day. Their new album is surprising too.

Through watching them YT has also suggested Within Temptaion and Eluviette as well, who are also pretty good too.

Most metal is too harsh for me today, overly aggressive. This just about hits the spot.

I don't know the first two, do like though. My GF will love that.

Alestorm, naturally I like them. I saw them at Sonisphere UK 2014 as well, and they were amazing. Incidentally, google the poster for that festival. It's the most epic lineup of all time.

I'm an operatic/symphonic metal fan. Nightwish, Tarja, Delain, Within Temptation, Stream of Passion, After Forever, Winter's Eden, Therion, Evanescence.
Have you heard NW's new album? It's pretty good, and it'll be interesting to see how they cut it live.

Also a big Deep Purple fan, they have a new album out this year.

I haven't heard NW's new album. I confess I'm more a Tarja-era fan. Someday I'll catch up with the post-Tarja albums, though.

Scotland had a few really good bands in the late 80s, like the Almighty and Gun.

I've heard of Gun but not the Almighty. I'll need to check both out.

TBH, the only real heavy Scottish band I had heard of and like was Nazareth and what a band they were!!!

Going a bit off topic, I know this may sound daft but I was recently surprised when I stumbled upon Jethro Tull live. I had listened to them in the past and as a Prog Rock/Folk band they were all right but I couldn't believe how heavy they were live, especially with Locomotion Breath.

I remember Gun and The Almighty from watching the late night show Raw Power and can even remember Floyd in an interview talking about how his mum would be asking him to go to the shop for a loaf of bread when he visited after a gig. He liked how he could go from a sweaty music hall filled chaos of a gig to the normality of doing chores for his mum. He was distinctive because he had a beard pleat and looked a bit of a nutcase but was obviously a really nice guy. Gun covering Word Up with a rock theme can't be topped. Similar to Faith No More - Easy.

My favourite bands in the 90s were the big three: GNR, Faith No More, Living Colour. I admit I worshipped Axl and wore a bandana. I was a singer in a band while still at school and we did It's So Easy and Paradise City. I saw them at the MK Bowl in 93 and they were supported by Blind Melon. Shannon Hoon had an amazing voice and I'll never forget how he accidentally kicked a big monitor off the stage and it went crashing to the ground when he rested his foot on it. We were right at the front and my mate caught Axl's cigarette holder. Slash looked at us and smiled. When you adore someone so much it's hard to explain how magical something so simple as a smile from someone can be. Our bedrooms were covered in posters of GNR and we were just meters away from them. It would be like finding myself at a dinner table with Kate, Roberto and Ethan.

Faith No More needs no introduction. When I bought the album The Real Thing on cassette I was hooked. As for Living Colour....

depends on my mood. I like the old stuff like Rainbow, Whitesnake, and the older works of Rush, Deep Purple and Motörhead.

Old stuff? hmm.. what about Grave Digger?:D

too martial for an old pacifist like me and too showy. I prefer something more sophisticated and better mixed. Grave Digger suppress the instruments with the singing too much for my taste. I am more for a symbiosis

I was a massive metal head in my teens and still listen to mainly rock and metal. Sabbath, Ozzy, Maiden, Metallica, Mastodon, a lot of punk too.

For those previously in the thread who preferred less heavy metal with non-growl vocals, check out the last couple of albums by Ghost. It's like 70's Metal meets Abba with the visuals of Venom!

I really love Floor's voice and how she performs the lyrics at the end.
