M'Benga Character Teaser

Sickbay, looking remarkably persuasive as a medical center, for a Star Trek set:

M'Benga's desk station, with some elements carried over from TOS:

He holds this thing backward from the way McCoy did, I think, but there are lights on the end he's pointing at the patient. Guess it works either way.

Sickbay looks great - love the inclusion of McCoy's office. Looks pretty full in the trailer, I'm guessing there's going to be at least one good old 'alien virus of the week' episodes.

I appreciate that M'Benga is actually played by an African actor rather than African-American, which is pretty rare for Star Trek. Phumzile Sitole is from South Africa, and played General Ndoye on Disco this season.

so it looks like M'Benga replaced Boyce (probably retired) as CMO and then will probably be replaced by Piper after Kirk takes over but still stays on.

I’m fine with the retcon of the Enterprise being the flagship…although they never said it wasn’t during TOS.

I do kinda hate how big they made sickbay (same with engineering) though.

Making M’Benga the CMO is an interesting choice considering he ends up in a subordinate role to McCoy down the line.

That is very cool to see. Oyin Oladejo, who plays Owosekun, like Babs Olusanmokun was born in Nigeria as well.

Looking forward to getting to know the character better, and possibly seeing the resident doc whip out some rad Brazilian jiu jitsu moves at some point, since we know his portrayer Babs Olusanmokun has the skills.

I had just edited, in universe, just count it as post-First Contact changes to the timeline.
I mean, there are plenty of rationalizations I can make. And it's not going to diminish my interest in the show. But, it's still stupid use of the term.

I'm liking all the character intro trailers so far. M'Benga seems pretty cool. I notice he's wearing full Commander rank. Sickbay set looks fine to me.

I think I prefer M'Benga's clinical uniform to the standard blue -- it's kinda backwards that they gave a black collar to the medical smock, one of the few TOS uniform tops that actually didn't have a black collar, but chose to omit that classic feature from all the standard uniform tops. Weird.

The "flagship" comment is gonna be like pulling the pin on a grenade but I can live with it. I'm way beyond the point where it's worth being anal about some of the continuity stuff; for me that ship sailed a long time ago. I'll take SNW for what it is and as it comes. This series will stand or fall on the writing for the new characters and the weekly stories they tell. So far I'm pretty hopeful that it'll be enjoyable and a fun ride. That's kinda all I ask for these days.

That's consistent with Disco, anyway, where Dr. Culber's rank was Lt. Commander and he wasn't the CMO.

I don't recall ever seeing M'Benga in TOS wear anything other than the medical smock, so we never got to see any rank insignia -- not that that always helps, they were notorious for errors anyway...! I'm not even going to get into the nonsense with the medical department in Discovery.

I have no major issues with him being a full commander but Lt Commander would probably have made more sense. Whatever...
