Man, the comments here are pretty much identical to the commentary I'd make on the Star Control franchise....
MoO2 is running just fine for me under Vista 64, without any compatibility settings. The only thing I had to do was fix the "dplay.dll not found" error ... which is as simple as creating a copy of dplayx.dll in SysWOW64 and naming it dplay.dll.And probably unplayable on my current PC anyway. Oh well...

Love, love, love Master of Orion 2. One of my all time favorites. I was also disgusted by MOO3. Horrible game. I actually ended up returning it after a few days.
Sins of a Solar Empire actually scratches my Master of Orion itch these days. It's a real time strategy game, so it plays quite differently than MOO, but it manages to capture the feel of it for me.

Forget Star Control, what about the original? Starflight!

I must be the only person in the world that loved Starflight 2.
Star Control 3 was okay the first time I played it. However, many of the best parts were (as I later figured out) direct lifts from SC2. And since some events were time-based, you could never be sure if you'd done everything you needed to do to trigger them yet or not. Of the 3-4 time I've played through SC3, I think I've only figured out how to re-unite the Vux and Vyro-Ingo once.....because the key event in that objective just didn't happen the other times.
On the other hand, when I'm walking somewhere with nothing else to do, I still occasionally find myself whistling the SC2 hyperspace music.
