Massive Explosion in The Center of Oslo, Norway.

This is horrific and sad. I cannot believe what one man was able to do, and to a bunch of young people no less. The death toll is something I cannot even wrap my brain around.

Speaking of the usual racist news site commenting crowd (Yahoo, I am looking at you,) I have seen a few people with the audacity to propose that this madman was, in fact, a Muslim terrorist "hiding" under the guise of a neo-Nazi. I... I mean.. what the hell?

My heart goes out to the victims families.

Things like this are truly sickening and show how disgustingly cruel some people can be.

But aren't all terrorists that nowadays.

At this point if you sneeze while doing the pledge you're a terrorist. I actually got sent up to the principals for doing that once.

Sent to the principal for sneezing during the pledge? Where do you go to school, east Texas?

Northern California. There's actually a poster here who babysat me when she was in high school.

To be honest, the teacher hated me, and of course her husband was the vice principal. She wrote on the referral that I was being defiant and not showing proper respect. Of course she didn't write down what it was that I did, but no worries her husband suspended me for three days and because he didn't believe that I would turn in the note I needed to have my mom sign I got escorted home by the school's resource officer.

Ah, so it was a personal grudge. That makes more sense, although it's still ridiculous.

I was reading the article about how the suspect called this attack "necessary" and my first thought was to compare this to school shootings that have happened here, like Columbine or Virgina Tech. I don't understand what would drive someone to do this, but since it sounds like it was political, it's just really really stupid and probably beyond my comprehension. :(

It has been confirmed that the shooter worked alone and planned the attacks for a long time:

I have been watching the memorial service today live from Norway. Very beautiful service.
They thanked everyone who has shown support to Norway in this difficult time or horror..and deep sorrow.

I have to say that I have personally been very impressed by the leadership, and compassion, that the Prime Minister of Norway has shown, at what he himself said to be "Most difficult days of my career".

I would like to, once more, send my deepest condolences to the people of Norway..and wish everyone there strength..and more sunnier days in the future.

I see on the news the mass-murderer has admitted to doing the killings but denies criminal responsibility - saying "I didn't break the law" - what the fuck? I'm pretty sure Norway must have some law against shooting children and blowing up parts of the capital... Does he think he accidentally spent hours murdering kids after accidentally committing a bombing?

Or is he just trying to get a nice cushy padded cell instead of a proper punishment?

Apparently getting arrested was part of his plan to get notoriety (well, that worked, though having a spellable name wouldn't have stopped me just referring to him as the psych/mass-murderer/cunt/etc...), and he did it as part of his hatred for Muslim immigration and influence. (The thought occurs to wonder, if he hates Muslim that much, why he didn't attack them?)

I also notice the first videogame connection has come out - he liked WoW and MW2 apparently, so we can expect those to get blamed soon...

He probably thinks he is fighting a race war and thus any actions he takes in that are perfectly legal. In war, you kill your enemies and it's not illegal.

Oh, but there are laws in war also - not specifically targetting noncombatants and children is usually near the top of the list.

I wouldn't put too much effort into trying to understand this guy logically.

As we in the business say.... he's a whack job.

They'll write papers about this guy for a long time. I'm guessing this case will play a large part of Psychology 101 the next few years. A decade from now, i don't there will be a criminal psychologist in Europe whose not familiar with this case.

And yeah, I study criminal psychology. Or studied last year, dunno if I'm continuing this year. tell you the truth i dunno if i want to learn thinking like this guy... And to understand him, you have to think like him...

I think they will find him strangely mundane, with all the usual suspects: externalization, black and white thinking, persistent retaliatory rage, etc. He's obviously intelligent, and I would doubt he would qualify as insane from a legal point of view (too much planning and precision).

I think sometimes people like this have a dark impulse, and then build a rationalizing structure around it.

JMHO

I fully believe that dark impulses exist. I also believe that the person who has them doesn't understand them and, as a result we cannot. And that is what scares sane people. We want explanations and sometimes there are not any. At least not that we can comprehend.

Calling it evil doesn't satisfy even those who claim to believe in evil. The most religious still want logical explanations in cases such as this so we can fight it and keep it from happening again. And there is no fightable enemy in evil when it manifest this way.

May the people of Norway find the peace that was ripped away from them so cruelly.
And may we all as a human find a way to deal with the unknowable among us.

Watching CNN now...there are still 4 people unaccounted for. :( 93 dead now. One of the kids died in the hospital.

From what we've heard so far, I reckon he's a fairly classic Axis II Cluster B personality disorder. Ticks plenty of antisocial checkboxes (on the malevolent side of things too), peppered with some additionational narcissistic elements and some borderline stuff too.

Coincidentally enough, I just blogged about this.

(Of course, attempting to diagnose from afar, on the basis of limited information, is fraught with uncertainty, and is more an exercise in armchair punditry than anything else, but that's my vibe based what we have, anyway).

Agreed. While my knowledge of psychology is limited, i agree with your hypothesis. Interesting reading.

Nicely done. I agree with the speculative assessment of an AXIS II disorder. The rigidity is a dead give away. It will be interesting to learn more about his life as time goes on.

I have done a lot of work with criminals over the years, and I'm struck by attachment theory when I think of many of them (not all). The lack of empathy is striking. Can a serious narcissistic wounding be far behind?

I also think in cognitive development terms. On one hand, this guy is obviously intelligent. On the other, like so many others like him, he seems stuck in concrete operations. Perceiving the world in such black and white terms is like an 8 or 9 year old.

Throw in some righteous indignation and you've got a perfect storm.

I've heard that by wearing the police officer's uniform he could get access to the island, but also blend in when the police response arrived and leave the island with them, but they showed up too quick.
Too quick? How do you figure? It took them 90 minutes to respond--something about they couldn't find a boat or a helicopter. I can't imagine he expected to have more time than that.
