Mariner's name

Darth Thanos

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
So, we have this ensign named "Beckett Mariner", the daughter of captain Carol Freeman and admiral Alonzo Freeman. Where does the "Mariner" last name come from? Shouldn't she be "Beckett Freeman"?

She changed it because she wants to be her own person not connected to famous high ranking parents.

See also Nicholas Cage, formerly Copolla.

Perhaps... but I suspect that if that was the idea, she would have given up when she faced all the paperwork she would have had to complete.

Why?

She doesn't want those connections and is shown to be willing to work at things she cares about. So I don't see the issue.

Or, as other notes, it could be a parent's maiden name and she kept it for the same purpose.

It's also possible that Alonzo is Mariner's stepfather, with Carol having married him after having Beckett with Mr. Mariner. In that scenario, Beckett just kept her bio-dad's name.

And we know little enough of Mariner's backstory that I wouldn't rule out Mariner being the surname of her ex- (or maybe even late) husband. She took it and kept it to obscure the link with Captain Mom and Admiral Dad.

Presumably (until we learn otherwise) Carol's maiden name.

...or Alonzo's.

There's also the possibility they aren't *really* her parents. Remember, they've hinted Beckett has been around in Starfleet for at least 20-25 years, making her 45+....

They have?

According to season 1, her and Boimler are "basically the same age." Boimler is 22 in the first season.

The "basically the same age" is a dodge.

Her best friend from the Academy is a Captain, she has served on the Ent-D during the "Descent" era (10-11 years prior to Lower Decks), and on DS9, with the show hinting this was probably during the Dominion War (6-9 years prior to Lower Decks). She was on each assignment for long enough to become known and friendly with both crews. Even if she were a Wesley Crusher-ish wunderkind, that puts her at 29-30, minimum, with mid-late thirties even more likely.

They seemed to be planning to do something with that information, and they haven't dropped it completely, but it has definitely been backgrounded.

Her best friend from the Academy is a Captain,
Which doesn't prove anything. Riker turned down his first promotion to Captain seven years after he graduated and had two more promotions offered to him before he reached the decade anniversary of his graduation. In the Kelvin timeline, Pike told Kirk he could make Captain within three to five years after graduating the Academy. In the Prime Universe, Kirk made Captain of the flagship by the time he was in his mid-thirties. Tryla Scott from TNG Conspiracy was a Captain at 28 years old, and is stated to be the youngest Starfleet Captain ever, with it implied in that episode Picard had held the previous record, and we know he commanded the Stargazer for twenty-five years when it was lost. So, I'd say it seems more likely Captain Ramsey made Captain very quickly than her and Mariner having served over twenty years.

No. One of her friends she served with on the Quito mentioned having served on the Enterprise D at the time of Descent, but there is no indication Mariner served on the ship, at least not as a Starfleet officer. A popular fan theory, which Tawny Newsome has acknowledged "being aware of" in interviews is that Mariner spent part of her childhood as one of the children on the Enterprise D while one or both of her parents were assigned to the ship. Possibly supported by the fact that Riker did refer to Carol Freeman as his cha'dich.

The only thing we know about when specifically Mariner served on DS9 was that it had to be season 4 or later, given the incident with Worf's mek'leth.

This came up a while ago, too. If I'm 29 and my friend or colleague or whatever is 22 I'd definitely consider us to be in the same age group. I don't see any kind of problem with how this is presented in the show. Mariner is obviously a little older, but I don't think she's supposed to be in her mid-30s or older.

Regarding her name: I always kinda assumed it was her mother's or father's maiden name. But yes, they never explicitly spell it out.

Really? I find that hard to believe. I always thought Mariner was in her late 30's (possibly even 40, like Tawny Newsome is) but she's still an Ensign because of her bad attitude.

I thought Mariner was basically a nickname. I can see wanting to not live in the shadow of the parents though.

Envoys from Season 1. Mariner says she did black ops stuff with the Klingon general "back in the day." Boimler asks "back in what day, we're basically the same age."

Though, as noted above, "basically the same age" has some leeway in interpretation. Personally, I believe she's late twenties or very early thirties. Old enough to have some experience, but still close enough in age to the others that the "basically the same age" comment isn't a complete head scratcher.
