So, we have this ensign named "Beckett Mariner", the daughter of captain Carol Freeman and admiral Alonzo Freeman. Where does the "Mariner" last name come from? Shouldn't she be "Beckett Freeman"?
Presumably (until we learn otherwise) Carol's maiden name.Where does the "Mariner" last name come from?
She changed it because she wants to be her own person not connected to famous high ranking parents.
See also Nicholas Cage, formerly Copolla.
Why?Perhaps... but I suspect that if that was the idea, she would have given up when she faced all the paperwork she would have had to complete.
I'd be willing to bet the 'paperwork' needed to legally change your name is no more than it takes to sign up for Starfleet/academy.

...or Alonzo's.
They have?they've hinted Beckett has been around in Starfleet for at least 20-25 years,
According to season 1, her and Boimler are "basically the same age." Boimler is 22 in the first season.making her 45+

Which doesn't prove anything. Riker turned down his first promotion to Captain seven years after he graduated and had two more promotions offered to him before he reached the decade anniversary of his graduation. In the Kelvin timeline, Pike told Kirk he could make Captain within three to five years after graduating the Academy. In the Prime Universe, Kirk made Captain of the flagship by the time he was in his mid-thirties. Tryla Scott from TNG Conspiracy was a Captain at 28 years old, and is stated to be the youngest Starfleet Captain ever, with it implied in that episode Picard had held the previous record, and we know he commanded the Stargazer for twenty-five years when it was lost. So, I'd say it seems more likely Captain Ramsey made Captain very quickly than her and Mariner having served over twenty years. Her best friend from the Academy is a Captain,
No. One of her friends she served with on the Quito mentioned having served on the Enterprise D at the time of Descent, but there is no indication Mariner served on the ship, at least not as a Starfleet officer. A popular fan theory, which Tawny Newsome has acknowledged "being aware of" in interviews is that Mariner spent part of her childhood as one of the children on the Enterprise D while one or both of her parents were assigned to the ship. Possibly supported by the fact that Riker did refer to Carol Freeman as his cha'dich.she has served on the Ent-D during the "Descent" era
The only thing we know about when specifically Mariner served on DS9 was that it had to be season 4 or later, given the incident with Worf's mek'leth.on DS9, with the show hinting this was probably during the Dominion War

Envoys from Season 1. Mariner says she did black ops stuff with the Klingon general "back in the day." Boimler asks "back in what day, we're basically the same age."Really? I find that hard to believe. I always thought Mariner was in her late 30's (possibly even 40, like Tawny Newsome is) but she's still an Ensign because of her bad attitude.
