March Madness Yahoo Pool

Ah, what the hell. I'm in despite only watching a few Duke games this season (largely due to the time change). Let the guess work begin!

I only followed vaguely when there were college basketball games on when I was hanging out at a sports bar.

But you know what, it's a single elimination tournament. The fun of picking it is that we all get to think for a moment that our instinct, our experience, and our insight is better than that of everybody else. But really, it's not. There's a huge luck factor that outclasses the skill element. The best way to go is just go with your instincts when you have one and go with the numbers when you don't.

Very true. In the past, I've definitely overthought my choices and my brackets were torn to shreds early on. This time around I half went with instincts, half with wild guesses.

Still, I went with a close Duke/Kentucky final with Duke on top, which is hardly surprising for me.

I resisted the urge to go with Michigan State all the way to at least the final four, based on it being my mother's alma matter. I've got Kentucky to win!

Filled it in more or less randomly.

I'm curious to see how Villanova will go. I always try to root for them, but they have an amazing talent for screwing up early. I saw one prediction suggesting they could be the first 16-1 upset.

Vegas says Kentucky vs. the field, so don't think picking them will help anyone win. it'll either be someone that got creative, or we're going to have to win this thing on points in the early rounds...

Exactly what I was thinking.

Picking Kentucky is not going to win the league, but I also think they're going to win it all.

So getting lucky early on is going to be huge.

My bracket is pretty standard, with a couple of chances here and there. Nothing crazy (at least I don't think!).

I went crazy. And why not? I haven't been following very closely this season and it's called March Madness for a reason.

Virginia, Arizona, Kentucky, and Duke, with Duke winning over Kentucky.

Duke's been screwing the pooch in the tournament their last couple of tries, which is why I don't have them in my Final Four.

....Watch this be one of those years where the Blue Devils make it into/win the championship game.

Let the madness begin!

I won my office pool in 2010 simply because I was the only one who picked Duke to win. And that was the year everyone picked Kentucky to win it all, only to be upset by West Virginia.

Two games in and my bracket is fucked. I had ISU in the Final Four. Geez.

Don't feel too bad. I had them in, too.

Just saw Georgia State overcome a 12-point deficit to knock out Baylor. Best part was when the injured coach got so excited that he fell from his stool!

All that, plus Notre Dame surviving by pure luck? Man, what a crappy day to be a #3 seed!

not a great start for me. Unfortunately, my bracket had Iowa St going to the final four, and that was the corner of the bracket I got creative with. The other 3 quadrants were a little more straight-forward, so means it will be harder for me to get points that someone else won't also get...

I had both Iowa St. and Baylor going to the Sweet 16, but so far that's the worst damage I've gotten.

So far.

I had Iowa State in the finals.

Last year I picked Duke to go to the finals.

This is the second year in a row I put a 3 seed in the finals and they got upset in the first round.

If Duke gets upset early and Virginia makes the final four I could still do okay. (So everyone else also get killed in that quadrant).

One of my coworkers picked both Georgia Tech and UAB. Both for sentimental reasons. She also had Coastal Carolina upsetting Wisconsin in the first round. If that actually happens, I will be so happy.

That'd work out just fine for me. I still hold out hope that Virginia won't steer me wrong. They ought to be safe against Belmont tomorrow... but after today's topsy turvy action who can say for sure?
