"Lost And Found"

It would seem that the Cairo is haunted!
Yipes! That was a creepy and nicely built up segment. When he disappeared I thought like Letjin that he had been taken however the Cairo crew had been taken. With his Betazoid abilities, there's a chance he is detecting something the sensors don't pick up. In the words of a wise man: 'Fascinating.' Great mystery. Little answers bringing more questions.

Like the little canon tidbit from the skipper placing it within the story. But again, the details about the ship, the procedures the skipper is taking in the event of etc all build a great little picture of the world they inhabit. Really loving that kind of attention to detail as well as the myriad cast of aliens and personalities.

I love alien characters, you get to think about things from a whole new POV, and with so many species out there to choose from it's a very rich canvas.

One thing that annoyed me with the Titan series, that humans were only 15% of the crew, there are hundreds of ships out there and not that many human beings, surely they wouldn't dominate on every ship. As for the Silverfin only 54 of the crew are human the other 70 are alien (with one Human/Ktarian hybrid in there as well as well).

Species onboard: Andorian, Bajoran, Benzenite, Betazoid, Bolian, Boslic, Caitian, Chandir (the "tail-head" aliens that always walked around the Promenade), Deltan, Denobulan, Edosian (LT Arex from TAS), Efrosian, Ellora, Fenarian (the Bronze reptilian science officer from ST09, the name I created), Girinite (Scotty's short assistant from ST09, the name I created), Grazerite, Human, Human/Ktarian, Kobliad, Ktarian, Napean, Nasat, Rigellian (Nurse Jenka), Rigellian (the Vulcanoid variety), Risan, Saurian, Skorr, Suliban, Tellarite, Terrellian (the holo-boxer that Chakotay went up against), Tiburonian, Trill, Vulcan.

It's one helluva mix for such a small crew, but hey it's my ship so why not? :)

Caught up with this and very much enjoyed it. Especially your attention to detail and your characterization work which you handle quite subtly by interweaving it seamlessly into the narrative.

I was a bit surprised that the mystery was not solved after all the odd things that took place. But then again it makes perfect sense that it wouldn't be left to the Border Service to figure it out. Like Leijten, every captain worth his/her pips would want to get to the bottom of mystery. But sometimes that simply is not meant to be. Kudos for sticking to such a bold, open ending for this tale

Thanks for the feedback CeJay. This story was always menat to be a mystery that was left hanging and would be looked into in greater detail at a later date.

I'm developing a list of stories to work on, and not enough time to do them!
- Finish off "The Ties That Bind"
- Hunt down the smugglers dealing in slavage from Starfleet ships during the war
- Shorts on the crews brought to the Prime Universe in "Convergence"
- Revisit Star Trek Challenger (my 70,400 word TOS-era 'novel')
- Solve the mystery of the Cairo
- Another little secret Silverfin side project

Got the first week in November off work, so will be sitting down and hammering out a few thousand words then.

Oh well. Better get back to it then!

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if they are some Ferengi or Orions involved with the smuggling. And the Cairo mystery - sounds fascinating. Are we going to get a visit from Q?
I'm interested in finding out how the people in 'Convergence' deal with being in the Prime universe. Of course, eventually James T. Kirk is no longer an obstacle to Decker's ambitions for command. I'd like to see where the other characters end up as well. ;)

You need someone to do the smuggling and someone to receive it. I see this as maybe being a little undercover work for the Silverfin...but we'll see.

I know this will upset more than a few people by saying this, but I can't stand Q. John de Lancie did a great job on bringing him to life (and Suzie Plakson rocks just rocks), but in my opinion they are just too OTT. So no, they won't be appearing in any of my works.

I've decided on how to do it now. I'm going to take several of the characters and give them their own little story, about what course their new lives take them. Got an idea for Ambassador K'Ehleyr already.

Of course, eventually James T. Kirk is no longer an obstacle to Decker's ambitions for command.
I always find it quite telling at the end of TMP, when Decker chooses to merge with V'Ger and spend the rest of his existence with the woman he loves.
Decker - "I want this, as much as you wanted the Enterprise. I want this."
He chooses Ilia over his command. Always makes me think, what kind of sad lonely life Kirk must have :guffaw:

It would be interesting to see if anyone ever wrote a story where James T. Kirk comes back and joined the Border Service. I can just see Akinola or Leitjin finding him somewhere or training him. I would also like to see what kind of crew he'd get and if anyone from the original crew come back to serve with him as a Border Dog.

Ok so I'm more than late in getting to finish this story. For that I cna only apologise. A lot of mysteries left hanging in the wake of the Cairo and normally a writer leaving so much unresolved would be infuriating. However, given the brief for the Border Dogs investigating it isn't their speciality nor their cup of tea. I also liked th ending note talking about the purpose of the Border Dogs and their mission. Neatly done.

That said, I look forwards to finding out more about the mystery at some future point.

I really like the little details that expand or explain features of the ship or ship board life. They are not too intrusive to the story telling but help to enrich the setting in which this is set. I like too how you flesh other background effects just enough - for example explaining about the Sloan and S.C.E. - just enough to inform without labouring it with a lot of unnecessary bog down detail.

Thanks again Mirandafave. Glad you liked it.

I was a little apprehensive about leaving the mystery hanging, but that kind of work is best handled by the SCE and other such specialists. The Silverfin did a lot of preliminary work, for the Sloane crew to work from and build upon, but they have their own mission to be getting back to.

The Sloane and her crew will be returning soon, in order to figure out the puzzle of the Cairo, with a little help from a character or two recently resurrected, and a special guest appearance from on the Silverfin.

I have the first week in November off work, so will focus on that story then.

I can tell you're one of those authors that nearly create a whole crew roster before writing...I've done that too. Like the others, I liked how you left the mystery for someone else. I'd imagine that's how it'd actually work. You only get your one piece of the puzzle. Moving on to "The Ties that Bind"...:)

I have all the positions allocated, all the species onboard identified and most of the crew named, so that they are ready, willing and able to pop up when and where needed. To me it also helps make the ship feel more alive, knowing who all the crew is and how they might interact.

As for the mystery of Commander Daezan and the Cairo, the former will be the next Silverfin piece I write (after "Hidden From View") whilst the latter will be answer a story or two after that one (I also have my entire First Season worked out in my head :) ).

Best of luck to you, sir. I hope to read more, soon, please. :cardie:
