People who died off-island but are stuck on the island whispering like crazy, is because they want to follow the exploits of somebody or the other who's significant/intriguing/interesting to them in some way.

That's my way of retconning it. I still call it a lame explanation. Those ghosts sure like to whisper right when anything interesting is going to happen. Do they know that it helps in building suspense among LOST viewers?

I'm standing by my theory that [some of] the ghosts are trying to help/warn the Losties whenever something bad is about to happen, which is one reason we hear them anytime the Others are about to show up. But since they're ghosts and most people can't really communicate with the dead, all we perceive are the whispers.
