Spoilers Legacy characters in Season 3

Or Mr. Leslie.

Discovery didn't invent seat fillers.

How very dare you. That man is the only Starfleet redshirt to be killed by a gaseous anomaly and live. He was one third lanthanite, one third Illyrian, one third human, and one third Q. He is a living legend, not a seat filler.

Jeannie Malone was a seat filler, admittedly. She often silently manned the engineering station but her big moment was giving Kirk poisoned coffee.

Those weren't seat fillers, they were as you said recurring characters. The SNW equivalents would be April, Batel, T'Pring and the Kirks.

There shouldn't be any recurring 'seat fillers' when you can have a developed, recurring character to take that spot.

There's space for Mr. Sulu at the Nav console. Or perhaps even a new alien character if they do something meaningful with him.

No Sulu.

Kirk is bad enough. Legacy characters are completely unnecessary from a story point of view when you have a cast of *counts on his hands* 9, plus secondaries.

There's room to balance a wide ensemble of characters. Some of the best films in cinema manage to do that in two hours.

So Korby is basically guaranteed now.

Of all the mainstay TOS characters, I think Sulu could work. Nothing to contradict that he was on the 1701 a few years before Kirk took command.

Get rid of Rong Fu's 'Jenna Mitchell' "character." 19 episodes in, she's just a seat-filler, like the Discovery bridge crew, boring.

Sulu, in the blue uniform, can take over Navigations while Ortegas as at the Helm. He can be a character for Ortegas to play off of and finally get something worthwhile to do. It would be funny if they don't get along.

A martial artist for M'Benga to spar with.

Also, he can work under Spock in the astrosciences. They can give him a personality overhaul like they did for NUhura.

No. No more TOS characters.

Or you can use the actress and character that you already have and give them more to play with.

you can do both. Stargate Atlantis brought in multiple SG-1 characters over the five seasons they did and it didn't step on any of the Atlantis characters toes or was consider "memberberries".

Atlantis had 20 episode seasons though. With only 10 per season and it already feeling like some of the cast are underdeveloped (Ortegas, the engineer) I'd rather we spend more time with this cast.

Bring on Richard Robau. Either get Faran Tahir to play an older one, or cast someone new as him. He deserves his spot in the canon as one of 23rd century Starfleet's finest captains.
Have him swoop in to save the day in a skin tight admirals uniform

Yeah, not everyone who fills a seat on the bridge will get to be “something meaningful”. Sometimes you just need someone to say “aye aye”.

I do like how they made Admiral April the Strange New Worlds equivalent of Admiral Forrest from Enterprise. (Minus being in a bombing).
