Laryngitis. Help me get rid of it...!

I know there's not much you can do to get rid of laryngitis, but I got it last night and I can barely talk today. Had to call off work today, kind of disappointing, but I'll manage. First time I called off work in three years.

Any ideas to help me get rid of this besides just the home remedies? (Humidifier, drinking hot brothe, etc...) It's very hard not to be able to talk with your normal voice!

Well, first off, stop talking as much as you possibly can. Save your vocal chords. If it doesn't clear up, go to a doc; you might need antibiotics.

I would recommend taking some anti-inflammatory meds (aspirin, etc) and drinking lots of fluids. All that gunk from your sinuses has gotten to your vocal chords; if that was/is usually triggered by allergies, you might want to also try some antihistamines.

But, really, what works for me is lots of fluids, decongestants (with aspirin or Alleve, and simply shutting my yap.

I figured as much, that's what most of the medical sites I read said. But my problem is I have to work on Tuesday and I'm not sure if my voice will return by then, and I can't afford to lose another day. Some of the sites that I read said it could take a week to two weeks to heal ! I can talk a little bit, but not much.

Mine usually goes for about two or three days, tops.

I hate to say it, but you might be better off in the long run by missing another day, or at least make it a half-day. Unless you can get through a day of work not talking at all.

I was told that attempting to talk would make it much, much worse--weeks instead of days. Mine lasted less than a week. Hubby didn’t mind my not talking at all! :p

Try drinking a glass of water while standing on your head and watching porn.

It may not cure it, but that should keep you distracted for a while!

I dunno, it really depends on what's causing it. If you need antibiotics, no amount of home remedies are going to do you any good.

That said, I believe in the healing power of green tea.

The old standby, hot tea with honey and l3mon...or cheap easy substitute is to use
peppermint candy as in a candy cane.

Use voice as little as possible, but when you MUST talk, TALK. Whispering is very bad for this.

Also, when it comes time when you have to be able to carry on a conversation, warm up the vocal cords fist, and keep them moist.

Best I can offer but it has worked for me. Except the warm them up part, I found that one out the hard way and nearly walked off the stage. I as husky, but got through the show anyway.

Good luck.

A really hot home made curry, chicken or meat leftovers , some carrots, garlic, onions, peppers, chili powder, and plenty of curry powder.

You and I are in the same boat (Though I believe I have Pnuemonia) Don't really have anything new to recommend except get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids. I have also found that "mushy" foods such as pudding and applesauce relaxed my throat

Hmm. I didn't know about the candy cane, I'll try that one :)

I think I'm getting better though, I noticed this morning I'm able to talk better then I did yesterday. I think a lot of it is just getting plenty of rest... I went to bed early last night with the Internet being out for awhile and woke up this morning, able to talk more normally. I don't think it's 100% back all the way, but yesterday I could barely talk at all. But I'll try some of these suggestions, thanks :)

Once when I was moving away from Yreka I got some sort of really bad throat infection. I couldn't eat or drink anything without feeling ready to die. I was terrified I might have gotten strep throat or something horrible! Stupid Yreka with its stupid diseases...

Black licorace really helps a sore throat. I dont' know if it would be equally helpful with laryngitis but it's worth a shot.

Back when I was singing opera, I would use Hall's menthol cough drops. The blue ones worked better for me than the honey ones. They taste awful, but I always got my voice back.

Avoid alcohol like the plague. (even in mouthwash) It's really irritating on the vocal cords, so it will prolong your suffering.

Thanks guys, for the suggestions :) I am going to my doctor in about an hour to see what he suggests I should do and to see if I need anything special for it. It's kind of weird, when I do talk, at times my voice sounds like it's coming back but then most of the time it's a loud screeching type sound like when your voice is changing during puberty. I am going to ask my doctor whether or not to chance work tomorrow, and if he thinks I should stay home, then I will get a doctor's note since it will be my second day off. I really didn't want to do this, because there goes my extra pay that I had for the week :) But I also don't want to chance on making my voice worse. If I miss tomorrow, I don't have to return to work until Friday and I'll have three days to help clear it up. I'm sure by then I'll be fine. The last time I had this (about 5 years ago) I think I only had it for a day or so, now it's been like two days. Hopefully I can get over it again soon
