Ktarian Questions

Six of Twelve

Captain
Captain
Samantha Wildman's husband was a Ktarian named Gresrendtregk, who lives on DS9. Naomi gets the forehead spikes in the middle of her forehead from him, obviously.

But on the TNG episode, The Game, there was a woman named Etana Jol, who has kind of a butt-shaped forehead with no spikes.

What gives? Does Ktaris have more than one sentient species or is this kind of the same deal they did with the Trill from TNG to DS9 - totally changing what they looked like and forgetting the earlier appearance?

Personally, I'm leaning to the idea that they did the same thing with the Ktarians as they did with the Trill.

ETA: Does anyone know if Gresrendtregk is part of Starfleet or is he a civilian?

He lives on DS9? Have we ever seen him?

I think they just changed the look. There's a list over at Ex Astris Scientia of all aliens that show up in episodes looking totally different in the various shows. It's pretty long.

I don't know if he's ever been seen, but he's mentioned in passing several times, and it's said he's either on DS9 or has been there at some point.

In Elogium, Samantha mentions that he is still (she assumes) on DS9. So he was there when Voyager went on the badlands mission I guess?

Edit. Snap! ;)

There probably is a similar explanation as for the changing Klingon foreheads. A lot of races must have tried their hand at those Augment virusus, invariably ending up looking more human temporarily ...

The makeup department likely forgot that species had been featured previously, or perhaps the director or producers decided they didn't like the original look and changed it, a la Dax and the Trill from DS9 looking completely different to the Trill from Next Gen.

There's production photos of Jadzia as a "TNG Trill." She had some issue with the make up though, so they did spots. As for Naomi, I'm sure they didn't want to put a bunch of make up on her so often, and they probably didn't want "cute little girl with butt-face."

The change probably had something to do with the logistics of applying makeup and filming with a minor. They have limited hours they can work and that includes makeup application time. I would imagine that those spikes were quick to apply and remove and much more gentile on a young child's skin that a large appliance.

I would like to see Greskrendtregk as captain in some upcoming Star Trek series or book. I like the name.
I wish that Samantha would have named Naomi to Greskrendtregk as well.
Maybe her full name was Naomi Greskrendtregk Wildman. :)

He has a large part in one of the Voyager books

Maybe Greskrendtregk is only like 14 years old because it seems like Katarians grow really fast.

It's more likely that they just reach adulthood faster. They appear to age rapidly until puberty then they slow down. Or if he really is only 14 then i don't see it as a big deal if mentally he is an adult. If Kes can be 2 then he can be 14 ;)

I chalked it up to an effect of hybridization. It might be a male trait in full Ktarians but it got expressed when combined with Human DNA.

The female sex chromosome for Ktarians would suppress the trait, but since Sam would have a different X chromosome...

You probably won't, but I do recommend the relaunch books. Kristen Beyer has been doing an amazing job. She has captured the spirit of the characters and has created a few new interesting ones. She's even circled around to a few stories that were left open in the series.

Slight spoiler.....

In one of the books they go back to investigate the anomaly from Twisted and that leads them to discover another huge Federation-like civilization.

In another book they revisit something that was a result of the Year of Hell
