The flying drop kick was just the coolest thing going. I loved it as a boy. It was also done on The Six Million Dollar Man by Steve Austin and Barney Miller ("The Seven Million Dollar Man"). And it was done at least once on The Bionic Woman ("In this Corner, Jaime Sommers").

But the only Kirk move I ever taught myself back then was the shoulder roll from "Charlie X." I could hop a low fence head first and roll to safe landing in the grass. I did it once in front of a guy who was no big Star Trek fan, and to my amazement he said I looked like Kirk doing that! This was out of the blue; the show hadn't been mentioned at all. A small thing, but what a moment...

As suggested (thanks to Balok's Decoy), another option was added to the list: "Off The Wall Ass-To-The-Face Slam". Amazing technique!! I had to change my vote after watching this one again!

And I'll try to put image samples of each option. Some of them were posted in this topic already but I'll try to find and put the rest of them.

Thanks for the great comments people and keep voting

Hmm. It's towards the butt end of a demanding fight with an equal opponent. Kirk is probably dog tired already. His opponent is below him, face down. Time to choose between two low-effort moves: kicking him in the face, and using body weight to pin him down. Kirk chooses the latter, but doesn't score a hit, chiefly because an enemy who appeared stunned in fact swiftly rolls out of the way. The rest is almost history.

When you have to take that long a trip to justify an awkward stunt, then the stunt coordinator/writer is totally failing at his or her job. My version of the question asked is "why was the fight choreographed like that?"

When we watch it - the average viewer, not the fan who comes up with in-universe explanations - it's just a weird move and probably just a poorly executed "missed kick" that they didn't have time to perfect. Actually, looking at it, it seems to be either a "missed kick" where Kirk recovers by hitting Thelev with his right arm on the way down, or a "use the wall as leverage" move to add force to Kirk's bod blow. But, again, Joe Viewer, sees Shatner jump, kick the wall, fall down and then keep his back to his opponent so he can get stabbed. Said opponent also wastes vital seconds straightening his tunic so Kirk can get the drop on him.

Those few odd seconds taint an otherwise great fight.

^Real universe - entertaining to watch

In universe - I'm laughing at the superior physical ability of the augment

It's almost like Kirk becomes another man when he is fighting! A man who looks vaguely like him. But looks more like a very young Martin Sheen.

Damn this was a tough one to vote on....

I was torn between the classic Karate Chop (which Sean Connery's Bond uses), the ass slam to face and the drop kick.

I am going with the Drop kick. It's the one that sticks in my mind, the one I'd be most likely to use against another kid at school. If sh*t went down on the street it's the Ace card.

I'm going to edit the 1st post in this topic later to concentrate all 'video' moves there for a better view, so newer visitors can see how the moves look like before casting their votes.

So sad about Col Green's murder at the hands of Kirk.
Kirk is so proficient at that move that there is no doubt he has used it many times before. He has it down to such perfection that the knife going into the back is instantly fatal. Poor Green doesn't move a muscle after that shocking maneuver.
