Janeway, kes and 7.

Kathryn-janeway

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Do you think Janeway had a closer bond to kes or 7?

Because iv being watching the episodes, and feel that janeways was more of a mentor to 7. Where as for kes i feel that janeway was more of a mother figure towards her. In the ways she always hugged kes and was more protective towards her.

I apologize if this thread has already being done :)

Although I found both Seven, Kes, and B'Elanna to be more like Janeway's foster daughters, it always struck me that with Kes, Janeway tended to be more open about herself.

I agree and I think that's because Kes was an adult emotionally while Seven was an emotional adolescent. Compare for example the scene early in the series where Kes goes to Janeway's ready room to discuss the Doctor with a scene between Seven and Janeway again regarding the Doctor (I forget the episode names but in both Janeway was considering repgrogramming him). Kes just calmly makes her case while Seven is more rebellious. In Seven's case Janeway has to overcome her annoyance with Seven to realize she's right while with Kes she's pretty much convinced right away.

Sorry I can't remember the names of the episodes - it's been a tough week. Maybe they'll come to me later.

^ Eye of the Needle for Kes (though she's arguing for Janeway and the crew to start treating The Doctor as an equal, not because he's being reprogrammed) and Latent Image for Seven.

Thanks! I do remember the scene in the ready room when Kes brings up the Doctor and Janeway says she's had so many complaints about his behavior that they were considering reprogramming him. I also remember that before they sat down Kes ordered spinach juice with a touch of pear and Janeway had vegetable bouillon. Can I remember the name of the episode though? Of course not! ;)

I agree that Kathryn had a more maternal relationship with Kes, as evidenced well in a favorite scene of mine in ''Tuvix'', in which Kes goes to her for counsel in dealing with her conflux of emotions regarding him-and particularly her wish to not give up on two she loved in respective ways. There can be no doubt, as to the depth of that bond, as seen in their last scene together in Kes' quarters in ''The Gift''...that said, Janeway was no less committed emotionally to Seven, and had anything happened to her, it would have crushed Kathryn. But, yes, Seven was more a student in some ways, and a 'reclamation project' as she had with Tom and Lanna-who yet were, like Harry, and Kes, her 'kids'.I also think Kes had the spirit of exploration, and curiosity that Janeway responded to, and in Seven they were intellectual equals-Borg science notwithstanding!:)

If you watch "The Gift", you can't help but feel that Janeway thought of Kes as her honest-to-gosh daughter....but that's prolly just because Mulgrew was sad that TPTB were dumping Lien after 3 years of fine acting. <sigh> I'm not a big fan of Seven at all, and the loss of the Kes character is only one reason....... :(
