Is this an authentic PlayStation email?

Today, I received several suspicious account registraion emails from PlayStation. I do not own a PS3 or PS4 and I definitely did not register for PlayStation. The emails come from Sony@email.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com. I'm pretty sure these are fake emails, but it would be helpful if you guys can confirm that PlayStation does not send mails using this email address.

Maybe it's legit and someone who knows your email and credit card number used them to register a Sony account. :shifty:

@intrinsical, it is almost certainly a fake. Even if the email address you gave, is legit, the message could have been spoofed - meaning, it looks like it's coming from a real sender but is actually coming from a scammer.

And as you say, you didn't register for PlayStation, so any emails saying that you are, must logically be fake anyway.

Well, this is an extremely elaborate spoof.

I received a total of 3 mails. First a standard account registration mail that asks you to verify by clicking a link, followed by a Terms and Privacy Policy mail containing a whole chunk of legalese. The final mail is a Sign-In ID Change, basically notifying me that the email address used for the account has been changed.

I've also taken a look at the website (with all my security turned on, cookies and javascript disabled) and it looks identical to the playstation website. I still have no idea what the goal of all this is for.

The email is probably legit, but somebody's using your email address to sign up for PSN.

The email address change is probably the original person realizing their mistake.

Or it's a phishing e-mail trying to get your information. I used to get those from "eBay" all the time.

While it's possible phishing has gotten a lot more sophisticated recently, I've never seen a plausible chain of emails done in this manner, from a single source. Especially if none of them are asking for any specific action.

The source email address, I would note, is legit. Of course, any address can be spoofed. A decent email client (or Gmail) will usually tell you if it thinks that's the case, though.

^^^Thanks, I didn't know that. I don't get e-mails from Sony so I wouldn't know either way.

Well since the email address is legit, I hope it really is just someone using my email address by accident.
