As a fan of Classic Doctor Who, I have to say that the classic 26 seasons have more contradictions, resets, and alternate versions of history that render any minor inconsistencies with the revived series moot. How many times was Atlantis destroyed? How many origin stories do the Daleks have? All before the credits rolled on Survival. So the new series is not a reboot or alternate universe. It is a continuation that is doing a better job of being consistent than the classic series ever did. And they are trying to be faithful to the original at the same time. Doctor Who canon was a mess and it is no more of a mess now than when it was before.

I’ve always appreciated the latitude canonicity is given in DW. They even have a sense of humor about it. From “The Day of the Doctor”:

No that's incorrect. I was trying to get copies of your work, you sighted your work. I wanted to read it to see what your theories are. Maybe I could learn something new. I am always into learning something new, and try despite your preconcieved notions about me, to keep an open mind. There was nothing nefarious about what I wanted. Don't put that on me. I would never want to violate anyone's privacy, hence why I asked. A hacker or an ass would do something different. I have not the technical skill in those unlawful areas, to even attempt such things.
