Internet Explorer 8 = Garbage

I put the crap on my computer and I hate it. It crashes every few minutes. I want to go back to IE 7 but I can't install it because I get the message that I have a more recent version of the program on my computer. Can anyone tell me how I can go backwards?

And, please, I don't want to just change browers to Firefox or something. I want IE 7 back.

I repent. I'm sorry I strayed!

Can anyone help?

I'm on a work computer, and "add/remove programs" doesn't show under Control Panel here, but you could see if it can be "removed" from there. You might have to check the box "show updates" once in there, at least to remove any updates that were applied specifically to IE8. Then you ought to be able to reinstall IE7. Or try Firefox2 and avoid IE altogether ;)

Control Panel > Programs > View Installed Updates (Left Hand Side at the top as a link) > IE 8 Beta (1 or 2) > Uninstall

Thanks fo the help all. Got rid of IE 8 and the pesky crashes have stopped.

Problem is now, I apparently have NO control over the browser. Only buttons I have are for either the Google or Yahoo toolbars (which came with IE 7, I guess). I can't even change my home page back to CNN. No control for doing it and the browser opens on some damn thing called "My Webhunt.com". I don't even see y "favorites" menu here now.

What IS this crap anyhow?

Some kind of virus, malware, ...

Could be. I thought I'd try "system restore". Now I've got IE 8 again!!

That Webhunt thing is Spyware I think. Scanning software should disable most of it, some bits you have to remove manually sometimes if they use "browser Helper objects" (another goadawful hidden IE feature for malware to take advantage of).

You could also try using a restore point before you instaleld the IE8 beta for the first time - but this will of course restore any other changes you have made since then.

You know, is it possible since you have malware that it wasn't IE8 at all? That it was the malware causing your crashes, or an incompatibility between whatever toolbars you were running and IE8? Just a thought.

It's been my experience that IE7 is pretty much garbage too (though I still use it, for some reason.) It's the only software on my Vista machines that I ever have any problems with.

Maybe, but IE 8 really is junk.
I have the beta also, and I don't even use it because of how poorly it runs.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Update: After I used a system restore last night, IE 8 had returned, but also my home page wen BACK to normal and I had access to Internet Explorer buttons in order to make other changes (though I didn't need to make any). Gave up on it last night and ran some registry checks, error checks etc and lo and behold, so far, everything seems stable. No crashes at all so far today. I can deal with this.

The "My Webhunt" thing went to a page that seemed to never finish loading. probably some kind of malware, like was suggested. As long as it doesn't bother me more, I'll not worry too much. Tomorrow, McAfee runs his weekly check on my system. We'll see if that turns up anything but I'm not really thinking a virus at this point.

Well, enough is enough. IE 8 started crashing again so I went back and uninstalled it, reinstalled IE 7 and went back to a system restore point prior to me even downloading IE 8.

Now, Internet Explorer won't even load without crashing and an error message.

Screw it. Firefox from here on out.

I use FF2 but that's a personal preference. My favorite is actually FF 0.82, but none of my extensions work on that version.
