If Mariner was a man, we’d all hate her.

What she has with Boimler just doesn't feel like a friendship. You need camaraderie to mitigate Mariner's off-putting cockiness

Which they have. She looks out for him, he looks out for her. Whilst taking the piss out of each other or occasionally shooting each other with phasers.

If she WERE a man, that would be the standard "bro" relationship guys have.

You seem more exorcised upthread that they aren't into each other sexually. So I don't buy that your concern is they don't seem like "friends".

Not at all. I just think that the lack of any sexual chemistry at all is kind of forced. And a male/female platonic relationship based on the woman smacking the guy around needs, shall we say, a deft writer's hand to not get annoying for its lack of realism.

Then you haven't been watching at all.

Mariner, if she's into guys at all, is in to buff muscle dudes and bad boys. So no chemistry with Boimler.

Boimler, for his part, doesn't seem that interested in sex AT ALL except for the time he was hosting a sex parasite. But even if he were, he has far more chemistry with Tendi (even if the show wants us to root for her and Rutherford).

"Chemistry" might not have been the best word, but I think you have nailed why Mariner and Boimler don't work as platonic friends either. Boimler and Mariner are written as if they aren't even men and women. Mariner is like an MMA fighter and Boimler may as well be a Ken doll.

The fact is that Boimler and Mariner are conspicuously the leads, so therefor there should be an interesting (if fraught) dynamic between them. But their friendship just isn't "friendly".

I told you this toxic crap isn't wanted here. Voice your criticism of the show without using a term from the incel dictionary every other sentence or it will be a warning for trolling. Last friendly warning.
That doesn't sound friendly at all. Are you the boss of this board or sumthin'?

And if you haven't noticed, everyone here is having a friendly old time. Five pages of cordial responses don't lie.

Well, it's “friendly” as in not an official warning issued with warning points given (yet). And I give you three more guesses just who I might be in this part of the board.

And frankly, I don't need your interpretation of how this thread is going. Just dial it back with the sexist/toxic language and you won't have any problem with me.

Okay. I will be a Boimler going forward.

As if I didn't know that that was EXACTLY the term someone would zero in on.
Then why use it, unless you're specifically trying to get a rise out of people?

Let me ask you this though: If Boimler occasionally punched Mariner in the face: still funny?
No, which is why--as we've just covered--Mariner was disliked until that trait of hers was toned down.

In any case, it's quite odd for someone who is supposedly concerned about sexism against men to describe them with terms like "beta cuck."

Also, not that this is my business, but did I just witness you backsass a mod?

Obviously this thread was started with the exact intention to get a rise out of whoever would take the bait.

Gilbert Gottfried said it best ...

^ That'll be enough, thank you. Enough about “beta cucks” and @Death Ray's motives. Either continue talking about the show or we're done here.

Guess I thought you were mature enough to handle it? Also: this slango has already moved into the public lexicon. Charges of "inceldom" and "toxicity" are unwarranted as of about five years ago.

As a guy who more or less fits the profile, I choose to reclaim the term!

If Mariner were a man she'd be a bit like Tom Paris in Season 1 of VOY and despite the character's growing pains he wasn't hated. She'd be Tom Paris with a louder personality and more willing to tell off superior officers but Tom wasn't exactly a go along with everything kind of guy to start with.

If Mariner identified as a man, then he'd identify as a man. Any discussion beyond that is just sexism pushed around the map.
