I can't stand Trip

"Trip" is the worst character on enterprise, maybe in the entire Star trek universe. Its the southern accent and STUPID one liners that just ruin him. It is not even a real southern accent. Connor Trinneer speaks perfect english.
He says stuff like:
Cap'n
Hunderds

Does anyone else agree with this?

I found him bland and mildly annoying until the third season, when he (and the rest of the crew) gained a little depth. He was likable after that.

The most horrible character in Star Trek is Beverlump. The second is Chakotay. No one else can dream of reaching their levels of pure suck.

I think the thing that bothered me most about his accent wasn't that he was Southern. I think I was annoyed that he was supposed to be from Florida and sounded straight out of the Texas area. (I should know, I've lived in Florida and Texas.)
But why is this such a sticking point? Lots of people where I live don't have a "Bahston" accent, even though they've been living here for years, or were even born here. You'd be hard-pressed to place my accent, and I don't even try -- and when I get angry, I revert to the accent of my parents, who are not American.

Nobody in Florida has a southern-style accent? Everyone sounds the same in Texas? The "you should sound like the state you're from" argument doesn't fly, now that people move about the country and the world at will. A hundred years from now? It will matter even less.

Maybe Trip's mom was from Alabama. Maybe he went to school in Houston. Maybe he's just comfortable with the drawl and spread of that particular way of speaking. It's just not that perplexing to me, and certainly isn't a dealbreaker.

My parents are from Tennessee and have different accents even though they grew up just miles from each other. For some reason my Dad has a more Georgian accent. Possibly because he lived in Georgia for a while as a kid.

Isn't the Florida Panhandle called "South Alabama"? ;)

Trip is from Panama City. That's in the "redneck" portion of Florida. (What? It actually is nicknamed the "Redneck Riviera.") I'll bet you take a native of Panama City and a native of Miami, and the one from Panama City will sound a lot more like Trip than would the one from Miami.

I haven't been here in a while I come back and first thing I see is this topic.

I'd feel guilty if I would miss the chance to defend Charles Tucker III with all my Internet power ;)

So no, I disagree.

Um, are you mad because Trip was written with a southern accent, or because Trinneer doesn't do a good one?

I don't like Trip, but I can't even agree that he's the worst on ENT, so long as Travis still counts as a character.
Hell, Porthos was a better character than Mayweather.

Can you even call Mayweather a main character? There were extras and recurring characters on TNG, DS9, and Ent. that were more developed characters than Mayweather (Vash, Garak, Shran) and they had far more and better lines than Mayweather.
That's because every time Montgomery is called upon to act, you start wishing for the scene to end! :p

And yet your avatar clearly shows him taking a leak on what's no doubt a very important and expensive warp conduit...

I like Trip. He is my favorite male ST character. But, I can understand how you can not like a major character. For me it is Riker. First season Riker was too arrogant and when he had the scene in the "boy toy" costume I almost lost my lunch. Mayweather, Harry Kim, and many others can be ignored. I could not ignore Riker. He was too prominent. I think he was the only ST character that I did not like when writing was supposed to make him likable. Unlike Polaski, who was a cold hearted doctor with writing to make you not like her. But, while I did not like her, it was in different context. (I seem to be rambling. Signing off now....)

trip's a tricky one.

he wildly varies between being genuinely likeable and being the thickest sentient being in the quadrant
