Personally, when thinking about arrogance, I divide the world into a) the deliciously arrogant and b) the unpleasantly arrogant. The deliciously arrogant have flair and panache, the unpleasantly arrogant lack insight and are ploddingly direct. I really enjoy watching the deliciously arrogant operate: you can see the sheer joy with which they glide through the world using a mix of force of personality, conviction and elegant wordplay. The difference between the two groups is an emotional awareness of others. Add emotional awareness to arrogance and it becomes delicious. Without it, it is just unpleasant. Both categories of person can potentially be dangerous, but the delicious will metaphorically slide a stiletto through the ribs whereas the unpleasant will take a sledgehammer to your skull.

This is perfect and pretty much sums up how I feel.

I haven't got any strong feelings on who is humble and who is arrogant. Except for Spiff...

I never see Spiff on the board now. We only ever interacted in the BR, but I often looked forward to reading what he had to say. In that limited sense he was another of my favourite posters... and I miss him. :(

He never leaves the BR anymore. He just sits in his office, scrolling through the member list, mumbling and sending the rest of us out on Packie runs.

I've certainly got a strong ego and I'm fully aware of my intelligence and knowledge and talent. Yet I'm also fully aware that, like everybody else, the things I can't do vastly outnumber the things I can do. And I'm also fully aware, and appreciate, the gifts and talents of others-- in fact, I take great pleasure in the gifts and talents of others. And I always try to be respectful of others even when we disagree (unless, y'know, they're scum :D). So I'm humble, but not to the extent of diminishing myself. :)

What the grape said...

I have no right to give myself a label. All that matters is what everyone else thinks I am.

I am at least relieved to see that you have enough insight not to try claiming this as being a humble position to adopt.

I never said it was.

The way I look at it is this: Saying that you're arrogant can be true, but saying you're humble never is (that is an example of arrogance).

Oh, and I don't make the distinction that you do, about the different types of arrogance.

My humility is just one of the many characteristics that make me a truely great person.

The Uriah Heep paradox - of course!

I think Holdfast is quite right about that, actually. There is a kind of arrogance which is acutely conscious of its own arrogance, which is enlightened, which evidences a certain sensitivity toward the feelings and situations of others, which has style and which can even be quite charming, in its own way. The other kind is untempered by any of that and insists upon mercilessly and repeatedly bludgeoning others with its absolute lack of those qualities. It's usually quite unpleasant and sometimes very ugly.

The first can be appreciated, to one degree or another; the other cannot.

I would say that both examples - in terms of musicianship and related attitudes - can be found in [hushed tones, lest anyone hear me] Prog Rock. Not just Prog of course, but I think it's a good example.

And me? I'm humblygant.

I'll balance it by claiming arrogumbly.

Edit:

Drat - there's no option for it.

Humble:
jamestyler.

I know quite a few people who would disagree with you

In honesty I'm probably on the humble side of things. I don't put myself on a pedestal and in my line of work, thats a rare thing.

Theres a general belief in wrestling that you have to be brash, arrogant and opinionated in order to get ahead. While it can work it just feeds an uncontrollable ego and makes you a generally unlikable person.

...but I can fake arrogance pretty well when I need to.

If anyone wants to beome more humble I know a guy who can help you with that. And he does it the old-fashioned way.

I can also break your back, make you humble. But thats another issue ;)

There's also that beautiful arrogance that says Humanity can bend the Universe to its will. That we can fight back the cold, cure disease, cheat death, go to the stars. The kind of arrogance that shakes its fist at entropy.

Some might call it hubris, but they just have low goals. :D

Eh?

I always thought that was a contradiction in terms. How can an arrogant person, by definition, be concerned with or about anything and anyone other than themselves?

Both - Depends on the situation, the time of day, what mood I'm in, who's around...

Then again, I shall just let my avatar speak for me.

From what I can tell, I'm only seen as arrogant by people that are themselves arrogant. I speak to everyone as an equal, and I get irritated when people speak down to me. People that think they're better than me often see me as arrogant because, how dare I think myself their equal?

When I deliberately act arrogantly, it's usually either in response to being talked down to, or I'm being sarcastic; sometimes both at the same time. Partially, I think I do it hoping the other person will realize this is how people see me when I get like this but subtlety is lost on most people. Most of the time people can't tell when I'm being facetious because, apparently, I'm the world's foremost expert in deadpan delivery. (That was sarcasm.) I think it's more because they're too lazy to think about what I said for two and a half seconds and just default to taking me at face value. I have dialogues like the following constantly:

Kommander: "Yeah, it's irritating when people bring young children to restaurants. I figured out a solution though. The other day, I was sitting in a restaurant and this baby starts crying. My food hadn't arrived yet, so I thought of a way to kill two birds with one stone. I walked over to the table with the infant, killed it, and then ate it, bones and all, right there in front of everyone. If there were any other parents in there, I bet they'll think twice about bringing their child places when they can't keep them quiet."

Dumbass: "Seriously?"

Kommander: (sigh) "Yes, I go around murdering and eating children, and then I tell everyone about it. That's why I'm not all over the news or in jail or anything."

Dumbass: "That's terrible. I know you're my friend and everything, but I think you should turn yourself in. Murder is bad."

Kommander: (stunned silence. Gets up and walks away.)

Anyway, yeah, I'm arrogant.
