When Oliver Hirschbiegel staged the famous bunker scene in his 2004 movie, with Bruno Ganz as Hitler, he wasn't expecting it to be appropriated for comedy; a dramatic recreation of Hitler's last stand is not exactly a laugh-out-loud subject. And yet the German filmmaker is pleased, nay, thrilled that YouTube enthusiasts have taken it upon themselves to reinterpret it to address anything from Hillary Clinton's loss to the Taylor Swift-Kanye West feud.

"Someone sends me the links every time there's a new one," says the director, on the phone from Vienna. "I think I've seen about 145 of them! Of course, I have to put the sound down when I watch. Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn't get a better compliment as a director." Some of Hirschbiegel's favorites are the one where Hitler hears of Michael Jackson's death, and one in which the Fuhrer can't get Billy Elliot tickets.

As for the idea of such a serious scene being used for laughs, Hirschbiegel thinks it actually fits with the theme of the movie. "The point of the film was to kick these terrible people off the throne that made them demons, making them real and their actions into reality," he says. "I think it's only fair if now it's taken as part of our history, and used for whatever purposes people like." He adds, "If only I got royalties for it, then I'd be even happier."

These Hitler videos have really passed their expiration date. They were really funny once, but the meme got old four years ago. I wish people would come up with something new.

The sad thing is Downfall is a fantastic piece of filmmaking. Yes most people have never seen it, even though they probably know the joke.

I think it's available on both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Just throwing that out there incase anyone's interested.

I screened the film for a class after all the parody clips hit the internet and was dreading the actual scene--pretty sure there would be chuckles or something--but, viewed within the context of the film as a whole, the scene remains powerful and compelling (no inappropriate laughs in class). I don't get the urge to laugh when I watch the film (it probably helps that the subtitles are not funny in the least).

I feel like watching that movie again, now. Luckily I have it in my collection.

Downfall is a masterpiece, primarily b/c the actor who plays Hitler pretty much is the Fuhrer, and the entire story from beginning to end seems a total nightmare fantasy. But the viewer knows better. They say truth is stranger than fiction. Way better than the Anthony Hopkins version.

I don't like or even watch 99% of the "Hitler Reacts" dubs, b/c they're old, tired, and mostly stupid, but there was one where he ranted "how dare that fucker die on my birthday" referring to Michael Jackson, and I couldn't help but laff.
