Spoilers His Dark Materials TV series

Really? I didn't get that vibe at all. It probably didn't help that she didn't have a good wifi connection.

HBO has released a new trailer for Season 2

Good, November is plenty of time for me to watch Season 1.
I can't remember the books very well, so I can't really judge how accurate it is to the book. The only thing I remember is that Will and Lyra spend time in Cittagazze and our modern day London, and those two locations are pretty clearly in the trailer, so that's a good sign.

Looks pretty good. I didn't see anything that looks like they diverged too much from the books (once I figured out what the black shimmering stuff in the air was suppose to be).

Well, there is an extra character there unless he shows up after the first novel.

So did everyone just miss that it’s back on?
I only found out by chance on the day, but it still recorded on my set-top box. I've enjoyed what I've what I've seen of it so far. However, when they came here (and I do mean 'here' literally as well as figuratively as I live a few hundred yards from the spot where they film the crossing point between our world and theirs) I really wish that Lyra was exposed to some more of the aspects of our world that would be foreign or wondrous to her to see her reactions. For instance, walking down a street in our Oxford she encounters a same-sex couple which I imagine based on the nature of her world would be to say the least frowned upon on her Earth.
Or when she visited the physicist to discuss dust there was a poster-sized picture of one of these:

I doubt they have space travel on Lyra's Earth.

I started the first season earlier this week. I enjoyed it a lot, and from what I can remember of the book, they seem to have stuck pretty close to it.

No, I'm not watching, but I am enjoying hate-reading the lukewarm AV Club reviews. When it comes to these books, I'll take no adaptation over a mediocre one any day. :p

I just finished re-reading The Subtle Knife--so I will be watching the first couple of episodes this week. I enjoyed reading the books again, but I think that the passion some people have for the novels must be dependent on the age when they first read them. I was in my twenties and teaching when the novels were first released, but based on what made me passionate about when I was young I can easily understand people's intense feelings for the series. The first season was a pretty well done on screen adaptation of the novels; in many ways it was a better adaptation than A Game of Thrones.

Mind if I ask howso?

I feel GoT's biggest issue, especially toward the end, is trying to fit too much material into too few episodes, and losing a lot of the nuance in the process.

GoT changed a lot of things even in early seasons--often things that really changed character dynamics within the story. (I really like GoT all the way through, however) Even in the first episode the marriage between Drogo and Daenerys begins in sexual violence when in the book it is a much more tender and loving scene. Drogo in the novel is much more nuanced right from the beginning than he is in the series. Add to that the addition of gratuitous nudity and sex throughout that does nothing to forward the story and did not happen in the novels.

The first season of His Dark Materials, although it does make additions to the story, remains more faithful to the story and themes of the novel. I am curious to see where season 2 takes us.

I'd cite the Drogo-Daenerys interactions as one thing that suffered due to the time compression. Really I wish Drogo had been given a bit more to do (though I did like his appearance at the end of S2).

I think most of GoT holds up, but I'd call the next-to-last season 'faltering' and I think it really dropped the ball on the last season, trying to cover too much stuff in far too few episodes.

I haven't seen HDM yet, though I read the books some time ago.

I can't remember, were the books just from Lyra and Will's perspectives?

The Subtle Knife has several chapters focusing on different characters. The witches, Scoresby, and the physicists studying dark matter. I believe The Phantom Spyglass had a similar structure but it has been 20 years since I read it. I think The Golden Compass was entirely Lyra's perspective but I could be wrong.

I agree with you. I love watching the series and thoroughly enjoyed the final season, much more than the penultimate season. I was just responding to somebody above thread that in my opinion HDM is a more faithful interpretation of the books than GoT was. But maybe that is why a lot of people feel it is a lackluster production--the books tend to be a relatively "low key" action story which works great on the page but is probably difficult to translate well to the screen.
