HBO's True Blood

True Blood is an Americantelevision drama series created by Alan Ball, based on the Sookie Stackhousebook series by Charlaine Harris.

I watched the two episodes that have aired so far out of the 12. The shows been given a green light for a 2nd season already.

I kind of like this show. The cast are 99% people I have never heard of with the exception of the main character Sookie played by Anna Paquin (Rogue from the X-men movies)

Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.
Local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), however, knows how it feels to be an outcast. "Cursed" with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires — particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill's arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test.

The acting an dfeeling of the show is kind of poor, like low budget but for me it just make sit feel more real life and less tv show. It graphic as far as violence and laguage. I wouldn't let kids or young teens watch it since out of the two episodes there were many sexual scenes. This is a quite interesting show none the less, its not for everybody but its worth checking out. Its very political as far as Vampires faught for equal rights and their is discrimination.

Any one else hve a comment or anything to add, I havent read the books, vampires are not really an intrest of mine.

Why would anyone let kids watch something on HBO?
Because their American ?

I was more going along the line that if your child is talking about watching some vampire show called true blood an dyou don't mind them watching blood and gore...there are some other things you may not want them to watch.

I find the universe of the show very interesting. The concept of the vampires looking for equality and rights is very intriguing. Some of the characters are interesting. Anna Paquin is alright, but there are times when she comes off wrong.

The bigger problem is Bill. His history is interesting, but he's being played by an actor who's dull as dirt. He pulls me out of every scene he's in, leaving me wondering just what in the hell is so intriguing to Sookie about this guy other than the fact that she can't hear his thoughts.

well i agree about the actor playing Bill, thankfully iI think episode three will have a new vampire in it, a viking.

I watched for 1/2 hour and didn't see Anna naked yet, so I moved on with my life. :)

I think the reason True Blood isn't popular around on this board is because most of us aren't teenage girls that loooooove vampire romances. We all hate that stuff. :rommie:

Why did they make Anna Paquin a fake blond by the way?

It really never appealed to me a romance

The show certainly has the potential to fall down that well, but so far its been fairly restrained in the swooning romance department.

Because Sookie is a blonde.

The Southern Vampire books, upon which the series is based, is pretty far removed from your avergae bit lit. It is refreshingly unlike, say, the melodramatic trash of Anita Blake. The books are written by Charlaine Harris, who is primarily a mystery writer, so the stories are mostly mysteries with a variety of fantasy elements, of which vampires are only one part. There's Sookie's telepathy, and not everyone else in the show is entirely human either.

I like it so far. Can't wait to see more characters get fleshed out. I just really want to see her brother get beat on by various people. I haven't read the books, so I don't know if the character that's bothering me, if he's supposed to, or if it's the actor's choices that bug me.

The character Arlene, one of the bartenders, makes a comment just like that in the first episode, saying if it's on HBO, it may be too scary for her kids to watch it.

That is the entire reason she's interested in him. All her life, she's been able to hear the thoughts of other people. For the first time, she can't hear what he's thinking, for good or bad, that's all she cares about. She only knows about vampires being out, she doesn't know about any of the others. All she knows, at this point, is that when she's with him, it's quiet, and she desperately wants that. Of course, there's more going on with Bill than we know just yet.

Fangtasia is supposed to be introduced in episode 4, according to the docs that played before the series started.

Anna has a no-nudity clause in all her contracts. Any boobies you may see would be from body doubles. Besides, there's plenty of other nudity in this show from other characters.

Charlaine doesn't write romance, she writes mystery books. As has already been said, her books are mystery books first, with a little supernatural thrown in. Charlaine's version of romance and/or sex scenes is more or less "They kissed and fell on the bed. The next morning...." lol

Nothing to add. I just liked what you said and had to quote it. :bolian:

I'm sure it's the character. He's like that in the books. But, in the books, it's all first person, so we learn of Jason's sexcapades through later dialog. In the series, they can't do first person, so they show everything ... and since it's HBO, they'll show sex scenes, where in the books, they're barely as high as PG-rated.

I'm liking the show, which as with Carnivale and Deadwood, means it's eventually doomed to end early..

I also bought the first couple of books and I have to say the show is following the first one pretty closely except for the shows early addition of Sookie's friend Terra (sp?)...

I can see how someone might find Bill's performance dull, but that's honestly kind of how he's written.. He's quiet and unassuming...

There's a difference between "quiet and unassuming" and "boring". He lacks expressiveness OF ANY KIND. His introduction in the first episode, he's sitting at the table and it's supposed to be this moment. This important moment where Sookie notices this intriguing presence... and he looks like he wants to fall asleep. A better actor could be quiet and unassuming without seeming like he'd rather be somewhere else collecting that paycheck.

Tara, she doesn't come into the books until later? odd. She is my favorite character in the show, even a tiny more than Sookie.

Well I've just caught up on the two episodes, and I like it so far :techman:

The characters do need fleshing out, but it's early days yet. Like WHY does Tara like that jerk Sookie has for a brother? Why does Sookie's boss love her? Sookie needs fleshing out too, as I found her a little 'stunned' at times. Bill, I hope, will get more interesting too.

But in all, I'm intrigued enough to keep watching, and to look for the books :techman:
