Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

Is KijiBrother the first official male Pink Ranger?

On a core team, yes, unless you count the Lupin vs. Pat episode where Tsukasa was turned into a man. The only other "real" male Pink was the previous HououRanger in Dairanger. In Zyuohger, Yamato's uncle Mario once adopted a faux Pink identity as ZyuohHuman. And in one incarnation of the Kamen Sentai Gorider team mashing up Sentai and Kamen Rider, Momotaros from Den-O had the Momo-Rider identity, for obvious reasons. There's also Momohero from The High School Heroes, a recent unofficial pastiche or parody miniseries or something starring an all-male Japanese pop band. Otherwise, the only times male Rangers have worn pink have been in Gokai Changes or ToQger Transfer Changes.

Wow, two anniversary-gimmick seasons in a row, and we aren't even up to 50 seasons yet.

Shirakura- Yes……..my plan is in motion

Since the Superhero Senki movie deposited the characters into a version of Journey to the West, the classic 16th-century Chinese fantasy epic about the Monkey King (and the basis of Dragonball and the movie The Forbidden Kingdom among many others), I was inspired to actually read the book (well, an abridged translation, since the whole thing's at least 100 chapters long). I was interested to note that the Monkey King, who had shapeshifting and illusion powers, would trigger his shapeshifts by yelling "Change!" In other words, "Henshin!" Also, Monkey and the various demons he battles often turn into giants in their conflicts. It makes me wonder how much influence the book might have had on tokusatsu in general.

Donbrothers summary from TV-Asahi website

Once upon a time,
Heroes, the likes of which we've never seen before, and using the motif of "Momotaro" are born! Momotaro joined forces with his friends; the Monkey, Dog and Pheasant to slay Oni. Likewise, Don Momotaro (Red), SaruBrother (Blue), InuBrother (Black), KijiBrother (Pink) and even OniSister (Yellow) join forces to stand up to the forces of evil.

What's more, their name is "Avataro Sentai DonBrothers"! They are an "uneven" group of warriors, in both their looks and their teamwork. Avatar Data = These 5 loading an "Avataro" to fight; using Avataro Gears, they Avatar Change! It is also possible for them to Avatar Change into the forms of Legendary Super Sentai. Fighting against monsters born from the desires of humans, "HitotsuKi", and a mysterious organization who wants to use the HitsotsuKi to eliminate humanity, "Nouto", they protect the people!

However, that's a little bit further on from where our story starts. All of a sudden, High School Girl Kitou Haruka attains the powers of a hero when she meets with the mysterious man, Momoi Jin. Jin gives her certain orders, and that sets this world in motion! "You have allies. But first, you must find Momoi Tarou! And also, you must swear your loyalty to him!" Who is Momoi Tarou, and where is she supposed to find him...? Also what kind of allies...? The curtain now raises on the story of DonBrothers! Time for the festival!!

"It is also possible for them to Avatar Change into the forms of Legendary Super Sentai." -- Makes sense, sort of, given the meaning of "avatar."

It looks like the first episode will start out with the female lead as the main viewpoint character, which I don't think Sentai has done before, except in Timeranger to an extent. Though it's not unlike how Power Rangers Dino Fury began.

According to Io9 today is the 30th anniversary of the premiere of Zyuranger, that's pretty impressive, there aren't a lot of franchises that run continuously for that long.

Well, Zyuranger was the 16th Super Sentai series, and the first one ran two years. The franchise has been running about 47 years now, continuously since 1975.

Still, next year will be the 30th anniversary of Power Rangers, which is pretty impressive (though it skipped a year between RPM and Samurai). Though not that impressive, since its longevity comes from being cheap, due to being built around stock footage from Japan and starting over every year with new, non-union actors.

Super Sentai needs to cut back on what it considers a "Anniversary Year".

Every 10 years IMO is fine, but to do it nearly as often as they recently do is kinda tiring.

And Ryusoulger should've been Dragons & Mythical creatures, not another Dinosaur motif based season.

There have been TOO many Dinosaur motif seasons, & Ryusoulger was too close in time to the previous one.

They should avoid Dinosaur motif's for an extra long time to make up for how frequently they did it.

I'm pretty sure that they use Dinosaurs so frequently because they're one of the best selling themes for sentai, kids are generally big fans of dinosaurs. Since Lupinranger vs Patranger was more experimental (and I've heard didn't sell well), going back to dinosaurs was probably seen as trying to get "back on track", financially at least. It did apparently do better toy sales wise then LuPat, although apparently not all that great overall.

That said I do think that, taking financial stuff out of the picture and just focusing on the show, it was way too soon to do dinosaurs again. But, at this point I'd definitely take dinosaurs every year over what Zenkaiger did and what Donbrothers is going to do.

Also there's a new batch of kids under 5 all the time. They won't know about Ryuusoulger. So had sentai 46 been dinosaurs it would be the right time logistically.

Which is why we mostly got Kyoryuger. Go-busters had no gimmick/ collectible and it didn't sell well.

So what does Toei and sentai do? Bombard youngsters with loud noises and flashy dances with colorful dinosaurs

Instant cash cow.

Yep. I'm not saying I support it, but it seems to be a trend when Toei needs to try to pump up sentai sales. I'm honestly wondering if thats why the current Kamen Rider is dinosaur themed, I kind of figured Toei wanted to see how it would go with Rider, although I don't know if KR Saber had bad sales numbers or if its just another weird toei experiment.

I never realized how well the series could be adapted into an anime. Yeah the show was practically a live action anime. Akiko was an anime character with her exaggerated expressions. It's just weird that we actually have an anime.

It's nice how recognizable the characters are, with Philip being the most changed, with the green hair. Although it's disappointing that none of the original cast is returning, and it sounds like the music is just in a similar style to W's rather than using the same themes.

Also, are they even Kamen Riders in this version? There was no sign of it in the trailer, as far as I could see. Although trailers are often selective in what they focus on.

They’re using the Memory of Heroez voice cast from the video game. Philip is Desast and Mikakoshi is Akiko. Daisuke Ono (Teddy) is Yukiji, and Akira Sekine is Tokime.

Almost forgot this. Dino Fury season 2 trailer. Season 2 will be available on March 3rd on Netflix

Interesting that they're using Madame Noirs suit from ToQger for Void Queen

The first half of Dino Fury season 2 went live on Netflix today.

The premiere is called "Numero Uno," which doesn't seem to be a reference to anything but its place in the season.
It catches up with the Rangers as they continue rounding up Sporix beasts, with the team improving their skills but Amelia being distracted by running BuzzBlast while Jane and J-Borg are away (which I hoped was an excuse to write them out of the series, but no such luck). Of course, Void Knight turns out to be alive through unexplained means, and uses the help of a cybernetic Sporix to steal back his saber and a Fix-It DinoKey from the Rangers in order to repair his armor.

It's a fairly good episode, with some decent character interplay, and the opening action scene -- clearly original to DF, since the location was consistent throughout -- was impressive and quite well-done. The Bitscream Sporix that could exist in cyberspace was based on a Minusaur of similar capabilities, albeit a much nastier one, as evident from its Grim Reaper design. So the climactic footage was from Ryusoulger, as was a brief bit of the initial fight with Bitscream, the part in the square with the distinctive red double-arch sculpture, which I noticed in a recent episode of either Zenkaiger or Revice (I forget which).

Speaking of Japan, we learned that Ollie's mother is now at the Ishinomori Institute in Japan, a nice nod to the creator of the franchise.

Wow, I didn't realize Super Sentai had been around that long, I thought it had started just a few years before Power Rangers.
