Harsh Realities of Rewatching Deep Space Nine

Bad Thoughts

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Because I don't want to be left out:

10. It's fucking awesome!
9. Gul Dukat is a sexy MF.
8. Who knows what apolsterer made his clothes, but Quark could wear anything.
7. Something something continuity something something.
6. We all wish we could be a third wheel to the O'Briens.[ fixed]
5. Julian-Miles was the second best friendship after Jake-Nog.
4. Sacrifice of Angel's is still one of the best SFX setpieces.
3. In reality, Worf knew Jadzia could take him down.
2. The baseball
1. Sisko and Kira are the biggest badasses in the franchise.

10. I still remember the old days when people were looking at DS9 and basically demanding "what the hell is this crap?"
9. No opinion on that.
8. I think Quark and Neelix both seem to favor getting their clothes from the Ajax Sofa Company.
7. There was some Reset Button hammering early on... *coughLEENOLLIScough*
6. To the O'Brien?
5. All the classic Treks had a good bromance. DS9 decided that two are better than one.
4. I thought "The Way of the Warrior" was pretty spectacular.
3. I think they were pretty evenly matched.
2. Good thing Sisko wasn't a kayaker like O'Brien... not sure there was room for a four-meter long boat on that desk.
1. Dax and Worf were also pretty formidable.

Worf had natural advantages of being a Klingon: stronger, taller, heavier, training harder for his whole life. Jadzia was surprisingly strong for a non-Klingon but in a fair fight Worf would win. (Of course Dax didn't always fight fair.)

Kira didn't fight fair at all. Plant a bomb by stealth, or have a disrupter when your enemy has none, you win with little risk. Sounds good to someone who's small, outgunned, and outnumbered.

In DS9 Hunger Games, I think Kira would probably destroy everybody just by fighting dirty. Even Odo would be French-fried when he returned to his bucket and found that Kira had cross-connected it to a plasma manifold.

Probably the reason Sloane went after Bashir instead of recruiting the much more devious Kira is he knew that if Kira joined S31, she would be running the place in six months.

Her only likely competitor would be Garak, who under the same circumstances would have been running the place in three.

Garak wouldn't have worked for Sloane. He was a Cardassian and a patriot, even if that patriotism took the form of opposing the Dominion-collaboration government. Sloane couldn't end Garak's exile, which is what he most wanted.

I started having that attitude when season three started. when season four started as well.

I even wrote an email to Majel Barrett Roddenberry complaining about it, she was actually handling the email for her “Earth final conflict” show and she sent me a personal response, I wish I still had that email. It was about six months later, I decided that I actually liked it so I sent her a huge apology and she responded to that too.

I can’t make one of these lists though not right now…

I’m going through seasons five and six at the moment… in the pale moonlight is one of the most intense episodes of any television show, ever…

Wow, personal email with the First Lady. I am jealous.

She couldn't compete with Sisko either. Sisko would just look into her eyes and tell her seriously, "The prophets want you to stand down now" and she would.

I certain amount of love for Klingons from Curzon. A certain amount of opposites attracting (although that doesn't always lead to long-term coupled happiness). She was very young in Emissary and may not have had any long term relationships before Worf.

lol, and my original email was about why “Da’an” from earth, final conflict turned blue all the time.

at the time she was starring in that show, she was producing it, and she was maintaining the entire website for the show, including answering every email, that was just the way she was. She liked to do everything…

For my money it remains the best SFX set piece, period. While we'd had large scale battles centered on the station, this was the first massive fleet-on-fleet engagement we'd seen in Trek - and the first to fully utilize CGI (at least so far as DS9; Voyager had Scorpion pt1 and pt2 under it's belt by then). Nothing has come close to topping it.

My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I first saw that fleet charge.

It holds together surprisingly well, doesn't it?

One thing I'll concede about Berman Trek is that for its time it was a polished production and that's reflected in the clip you shared. Of course it dates in places, but generally speaking TNG to ENT all generally hold up well in terms of sets, costumes and VFX.

Edit - Oh, I just realised this topic was made by a real person for fun! I thought it was just like the other one.

my favorite effects shot.… Actually, there are two, The first one is in one of the second season three part about the circle, Kira and Jadzia are in that pre-impulse ship, and Kira has to line it up manually for Jadzia to fire- your head whips around during that shot.

The second one is in “what you leave behind” When the defiant does that loop underneath the galaxy class ship, that’s amazing.

(edit) ohhh I just remembered another one, in the pilot episode when they are showing the battle of wolf 359.

it shows the Borg cube blowing up the saucer section of Admiral Hansen’s Excalibur style ship.

and then, in the episode where they introduced The Jem Hadar, The Jem Hadar ship plows right into a galaxy class deflector dish, and we get another saucer section disintegration, like from TNG “contagion“…
