Great, Overlooked TNG Episodes

I would like to contribute to the forum by discussing some TNG episodes that aren't discussed too much by others, but are nevertheless very great episodes in their own right.

There has been plenty of attention given to "best" or "top 10" episodes of TNG, but for this topic I'd like to focus more on second-rate episodes, which are personal favorites of mine, so that these gems do not get overlooked by the fans.

I start from the early seasons and work my way up:

"Contagion" - A fantastic episode and one of my favorites from season 2. The Enterprise accidentally downloads malware from a space probe and it begins programming itself into the ship's computer. The crew races against time to find a way to repair their system, while engaging in a heated exchange with a Romulan battlecruiser.

"The Ensigns of Command" - Another great episode and personate favorite of mine. Commander Data is given the task of evacuating an entire colony who won't listen to his warnings. Data must get creative to quickly find a solution, while Picard and the crew must dig through thousands of pages of treaty, searching for a loophole to buy more time.

"The Defector" - Captain Picard has to decide whether or not to trust a Romulan. A really interesting plot and ends with somewhat of a twist.

"A Matter of Perspective" - I always thought this one was really cool. Very interesting to see how the holodeck produces very conflicting testimonies from multiple parties. Geordi and Data make a brilliant technical discovery to prove Will Riker's innocence.

"Legacy" - Two warring factions battle each other like street gangs. Packed full of action and really hard not to enjoy.

"The Wounded" - The Cardassians and the Federation are officially at peace, but a Starfleet Captain has an axe to grind with them after what they did to his family many years ago. A really, really good one.

"Clues" - This episode, hands down, ought to be mentioned in TNG's top 10 lists. An extremely fascinating situation has taken place involving a 24 hour lapse of the crew's memory, whereby a great mystery centered around Data has to be solved. It played itself out absolutely brilliantly. Too bad writer Bruce D. Arthurs hasn't written more sci-fi stories!

"The Drumhead" - I learned a very important lesson in legal theory just by watching this episode. It's really amazing how a show can be so much more than mere entertainment, and can give us insight into ethical principles we hadn't even known before.

"Power Play" - This one is just plain awesome. Invading aliens possess Troi, Data, and O'Brian. The crew must ward them off without harming the bodies they possess. Great action and thrill aboard the Enterprise.

"Schisms" - Finally a ST episode involving alien abduction. Really, really cool stuff, and reminiscent of The X-Files.

"The Pegasus" - Oh man, does this episode rule! Will Riker and his former captain from 12 years in the past covertly work to capture a cloaking device for Starfleet, and Will is faced with a tough ethical dilemma involving duty and loyalty.

I could have listed about a dozen more episodes that fall into this tier. Have you watched these yet? If not I insist you do!

I wholeheartedly agree with all these except "Legacy" which I thought was kind of dull. I'll add:

11001001
The Last Outpost
A Matter of Perspective
Remember Me
Timescape
Thine Own Self
Parallells

I think some of the episodes in the OP there, are well regarded in fairness. I wouldn't necessarily put an episode such as "The Defector" nor "The Wounded" in that category myself. "The Drumhead" is often discussed as a strong episode for example. However "Night Terrors" is a good example of a strong episode that I think is someway forgotten, "Clues", "AMoP", "Schisms" similarly.

I also enjoyed Night Terrors and The Pegasus as well I found Power Play to be very interesting

I think "11001001" belongs in the "A" tier of TNG episodes, I agree with you on the other two quoted.

We'll Always Have Paris is also very good, as you noted. That's one of those episodes I didn't care for as a young Jr. High Schooler when it premiered, but I really enjoy watching it now.

Contagion is one of my favorites. I wish they could have explored more about the Iconians and their gateways.

The Drumhead, also good.

Love Schisms always did. But Allegiance kind of got there first in alien abduction. I like Allegiance, but it isn't close to as good an ep as Schisms, with its creepy subspace aliens, and the sniveling aliens at the end of Allegiance are silly really.

Power Play is great too. Contagion is excellent. Donald Varley's log was just awesome storytelling. Agree with Tracy Trek above, wish the Iconians had been expanded on.

I like the Ensigns of Command too, but more for the whole legalistic insanity with the Sheliak. Love it when Picard dusts the plaque! Wish we had heard more of the Sheliak as well.

I'd add Starship Mine to the list. Love Stewart in this ep. And Data's small talk with Commander Huthcinson (and earlier with Picard). Yes it's a ripoff but honestly so obvious it's an homage.

'Schisms' is fun until I started to wonder, if necessary, wouldn't the promblem of subspace pockets go away, at least for the moment, by just separating the ship...

Its been a while since I watched it though, do I remember correctly?

For the longest time, Contagion was my favorite episode of the second season. It's still great, but the resolution feels a tad bit obvious, in hindsight.

Other overlooked episodes I liked:

Home Soil
Loud as a Whisper
The Emissary
Hollow Pursuits
First Contact
Ensign Ro
The Perfect Mate
The Quality of Life
Inharitence

I would categorize such episodes maybe as "middle-of-the-pack...somewhere in my 50 to 100 ranking (if I had them lol).

Powerplay, Schisms, Clues would be close to that probably.

Schisms is one of my favorite episodes. It had alien abduction and the scene in the holodeck where the abductees recreate what they had seen and heard was creepy.

I've noticed a lot of episodes I like are disliked on the forum.

Genesis
Masks (sue me)
Identity Crisis
Schisms
Rascals
A Fistful Of Datas
Night Terrors
A Matter Of Perspective
The Chase
Suspicions
Disaster
The Schizoid Man
The Game
Devil's Due
Imaginary Friend
Remember Me

I enjoy The Royale. Sue me too.

Kor
I love the Royale. It's reminiscent of A Piece of The Action, both in old-timey stuff and in fish-out-of-water comedy. And I love me some Piece of the Action (which I rewatched for about the billionth time last weekend). Let them bring a class action. In fact, I think I'm going to watch it (The Royale) right now.
