General Trek Questions and Observations

All that new music that young people listen to these days. It’s too noisy and you can’t hear the lyrics. Old music is much better.

And all this new TV. It’s garbage. They just make it out of a factory. Rubbish. Old TV is much better.

Don’t get me started on the books. Young people… I can say with authority, having never ready any of them, that all modern books are rubbish. Old books are much better.

Dude, you're overplaying your hand. There are tons of good books and good TV out there. Your problem is that you aren't a fan of modern storytelling, which is fair enough, but don't decide everything is rubbish because it isn't for you.

Strange New Worlds isn't for me. Many Trek folks seem to like it, let them have their fun. It isn't hurting anyone.
No, I am a fan of decent long stories. The problem is that there has been a degradation of educational results. This has led to the current problem.

In the United States the literacy rate has been dropping. This is more than unfortunate. It is a total disaster...

If people can't think criticality about what they are exposed to, then we are all in trouble.

To think criticality about the nature of everything going on in the world is a primary requirement.

What is good about books, in general, is that they hold examples...

Hell, even TNG couldn't keep its own lore and timeline of character histories straight at times. The Klingons were a part of or in political union with the Federation in Season 1 and then in Season 2 they never were.

Lies. Federation propaganda. Gowron corrected those baseless accusations when he corrected the histories after becoming Chancellor.

You forgot to add, “get off my lawn!” ;)

For me Star Trek works when it's not necessarily getting science right, but I can't prove that it's getting it wrong. If there's enough doubt for me to think "Well maybe a transporter would work..." or "Perhaps Deanna Troi could mentally communicate with aliens to get the ship out of the no-sleep zone" then it's doing its job right. If my brain completely rejects what I'm seeing then it's failed and I might as well just turn it off because I won't be enjoying it.

For me it’s all about maintaining a sense of ‘the world’ of a work, rather than nitpicking at science. Warp Drive and transporters are unlikely ever to exist. Like. Ever. But in the Star Trek universe they are all part of the fabric of the show.

See also Doctor Who and the TARDIS. It’s a work of nonsense, but an accepted part of that world.

Masks took me a while to process/rationalize. like the alien museum thingy's files didn't't agree with the D's compute, explaining why it was doing all that crazy tomb stuff. It wasn't the true purpose/function of whatever. It was a big WTF that night it first aired, for me. But not so much now.
