Gay Hollywood

It can still be dangerous. In America it's legal in 29 states to fire someone for being gay, and in 34 to fire someone for being transgendered.
That's a rather misleading statistic. In many of those states, it's legal to fire someone for any reason at all.

It is also quite uncertain that coming out isn't going to have a negative effect on someone's career. Will Matt Bomer have a career after his cable series? Anne Heche had a meteoric entrance into the movies, much like Jessica Chastain right now. After her much publicized romance with DeGeneres the best she could do was a TV series, years later. Will Neil Patrick Harris actually get significant roles, or will he do cameos and emcee for the rest of his working career? Will Sean Maher really work again? It really is too soon to tell.

I think the biggest factor involved with someone being successful or not in Hollywood is talent. There are other factors as well, but sexual orientation is probably pretty low on the list. Remember Anne Heche went "straight" after her relationship with Ellen, and coincidentally her career has stalled somewhat. Whereas Ellen DeGeneres' career has only gotten hotter, plus she has a hotter girlfriend.

I really don't think that matters. There are sure to be anti-gay employers in every state. And in 29 of them they can fire an employee for coming out of the closet. That makes coming out of the closet an increased risk in those states regardless of other justifications an employer might use.

They're actually married now, so it's been great for Ellen (I'm happy for her, too!).

I stand corrected. I'm happy for her as well. I love Ellen :)

Skipping over the greater importance of popularity, rather than talent, Heche's career was white hot, then tanked. Then she left DeGeneres. There is no question of talent here, Heche is quite talented. You might argue that jSteve Martin's movie Bowfinger ruined her, except that Bowfinger wasn't that widely popular, nor did everyone realize one of the characters was modeled on Heche.

In any event, DeGeneres may be the lesbian equivalent of Will Smith, which is not to say that others don't get the shaft. The point is, it is still too early to leap to the conclusion that coming out doesn't hurt one's career. And saying so is assuming that there is no antigay prejudice in Hollywood, or in the US audience against gay actors.

To phrase it another way, do you really think that people really do hate on Keanu Reeves just because he's a bad actor?

Sorry, I just got confused. Keanu couldn't have anything to do with "Gay Hollywood." Also, I forgot that "Keanu" sounds so waspy that it gets people's backs up.

On the plus side, you now know that David Geffen really likes you.:techman:

Yeah, she's adorable. :D

I like the name. It engages my sense of irony after a churlish fashion.

Pff. David Geffen likes everybody who likes David Geffen.

Are you sure about that?

(Okay, this is actually a photo that was taken for a play Keanu was in with Carl Marotte nearly 30 years ago in Toronto, called "Wolfboy", based on Brad Fraser's novel "Love and Human Remains." I just couldn't resist posting the photo under the circumstances.)

I've always said that in our current society, it's just as important as it's always been for LGBT celebrities to be role models for LGBT youths. Those of us who were fortunate enough to grow up and live in large urban areas have it fairly easy, but there are still many places in the world - even in first world countries which are considered more socially liberal - where it's dangerous for young people to live their lives honestly. The more famous LGBT people there are, the faster all of society will progress to the point where that danger will cease to exist.

^^^I thought it was obvious that I was being sarcastic. Since I wasn't obvious enough, let me say I don't believe any of the posters who supposedly didn't understand how Reeves was relevant. I believe the ritualistic Keanu hate is motivated largely by homophobia. If it weren't for the widespread belief Reeves is gay, Keanu hate would be as rare as Matt Damon hate. The occasional eccentric posting something wouldn't provoke a chorus of me-too.

The compulsory denigration of Reeves shows how much a celebrity, particularly male, has to lose. Which shows how absurd the insinuations that there's no big deal to coming out really are. The pretense that this example made no sense is just a spiteful way of whining about getting caught out.

PS I'm not including missing the joke about David Geffen, which could be genuine ignorance of the crazy story that Reeves and David Geffen went through a marriage ceremony many years ago.

I plead ignorance. I have never heard of any rumors of Keanu Reeves being gay, and I have no idea who David Geffen even is.

I'm gay. Have a lot of gay friends. And I've never once heard anyone speculate on his sexuality until this thread.

Is there a possibility? Of course. He's never married, and a quick google search shows that he's given some ambiguous quotes.

But it seems odd for you to complain a widespread dislike of this guy based on his rumored homosexuality when no one other than you has even heard of that...

Yeah. People dislike Keanu Reeves as an actor because his range is limited to catch phrases like "I know Kung Fu" and "Whoa."
