Gary Mitchell Lives!

Magelord

If you have not yet seen this 7 min love letter to the fans of the original series then it is my honor and privilege to post the link to this official video titled 765874 Unification.

As a 52 year old combat veteran with his wires crossed very few things bring me to tears… you have been warned.

Oh, and as the title suggests
(GARY MITCHELL LIVES!)

First of all, welcome to the forum. Secondly, thank you for your combat service.

Finally, we have like 3 threads discussing it around here. So, I'll link one just because we have so many different conversations: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/765874-unification.318035/

There's another in the General Trek subforum, as well as an introductory thread to meet your fellow Trek fans.

Thank you all around. I should have searched first before posting the video but I originally didn’t intend to link it. I just discovered TrekBBS via a 2019 thread about the fate of Gary Mitchell and just wanted to share a screencap or 2 from the video but I had forgotten how tedious it is to post images to these types of forums without uploading them to a 3rd party website first when I just opted to show the video. My sincere apologies for the redundancy when this was always meant to be a Gary Mitchell thread as he is such an intriguing character.

There are several possibilities. The Kelvin timeline comic did their own version of the Mitchell story, where the people affected were actually possessed by psychic beings. This was also a theme considered in the novel Higher Frontier. The creators of the shorts have taken a lot of inspiration from the comics.

It's possible that Kelvin Mitchell somehow survived, learned how to co-exist with his symbiote on some higher plane, and facilitated the reunion? Or that TOS Mitchell somehow survived?

Of God's and Men also featured Mitchell, if I recall?

No harm, no foul.

I have always found Mitchell a deeply fascinating character and welcome fresh discussion on him. I think the work done with Mitchell on this short is great and I think it even gives a better sense of what he could become.

I'll do you some screenshots when I'm on a computer. Plus the shots of Lockwood as he provided the reference performance for the work.

I still find it rather amusing that, as powerful as Gary became, Kirk managed to kill him by dropping a ROCK on him.

That rock should have had less effect on Gary than a gnat would have been against a freight locomotive.

My interpretation was that he surprised him and triggered Mitchell into an unprepared-for human reaction. Befre Mitchell could reaction as a "god" to prevent his death, it was a done deed.

We don't know that the rock actually killed Mitchell. We see Mitchell fall into the grave, then the rock fall, but it's possible the grave was deep enough that the rock didn't even squish him.

I suppose Prime Kirk, maybe, did not really kill Mitchell. Mitchell was grateful that he did not have to kill Kirk at that stage of his transformation. Later he "repaid" the debt?

It would seem that, even at the extent of Gary's power, his actual body was still vulnerable to attack. Gary wasn't indestructible - it was his mind that was super-charged, but he still had a human body with its attendant weaknesses.

@ChallengerHK makes a good point. Gary never got the chance to defend himself. Kirk got the drop on him (pardon the pun  ).

Gary Mitchell spoilers...

Gary Mitchell Lives! is kind of a short-lived proclamation. The comic that inspired his appearance in OTOY's Unification also shows his ultimate demise.

Though there's plenty of time between TOS and the comic, so he potentially had a good run. ;)

What's funny about all the various threads on this subject, is that it's appropriate subject matter for every single one of those forums. One could legitimately also start a thread on the subject in Future of Trek or Science and Technology and have it not be misplaced. Not that I'm saying anyone should...

On the topic of Gary, I'm hopeful that we'll see the character re-cast in SNW. After all, he and Kirk have been friends since the Academy, so it stands to reason that he might be serving with Jim on board the Farragut. Given that the time-frame between SNW and TOS is closing, it only seems logical to introduce Mitchell at some point within the next two seasons.

Gary Mitchell was sufficiently weakened enough by Dr Dehner to make him succumb.

The rock drop was so successful Kirk would later attempt to repeat his success with the Gorn Captain.
