The precocious preadolescent crewmember evokes Will Robinson from Lost in Space and maybe Gary Coleman's guest character in Buck Rogers.

Well, also Wesley Crusher.

I said preadolescent, specifically in the hope of pre-empting Wesley Crusher comparisons. Everyone points that one out, but the cliche of precocious child heroes was around long before him.

Particularly given that he was the pilot and all that, I think there's a clear Wesley influence. I'll agree it wasn't exclusively him, but he was definitely there.

^Well, that's what I'm saying: that while Trek was an influence, it wasn't the exclusive influence. Everyone notices the Trek parallels, but the non-Trek influences tend to get overlooked, so I want to make sure they're acknowledged as well.

Well I think the choppers corridor bit was also to parody some of the scenes in science fiction where the writer's were not able to think up anything logical for a big climatic scene, so the writer just came up with the most illogical thing, since even in Galaxy Quest, while the scene is funny, there is no practical reason for the choppers to be on the ship in the first place.

But I think the most obvious Trek parody in the film is how Tim Allen performed Taggert in the TV show scenes, since Allen said the lines in a very similar manner to how William Shatner said his lines, plus in the scene where Nesmith is watching the old episode on TV at home while getting drunk, the scene on the TV is very reminiscent of that scene from "Return To Tomorrow" where Kirk gives his now famous speech.

But another obviouse Trek reference is the design of the NSEA Protector. If you look at the ship the shape of it is reminiscent of the STTNG com badge.

I don't see the combadge intention here, but agree about Taggard. Also the rivalry between Tim Allen's and Alan Rickman's and to a lesser extend the other characters was a spoof of the relations between Shatner and the rest of the TOS cast.
The ship itself could have with some minor modifications easily have been a Starfleet ship.

it had a nacelle style engine configuration a main deflectordish, a bridge dome, just no saucer in addition to the main hull.

And then there are the almost 1:1 copies of the crew's rayguns, communicators and transporter.

The only way I could ever see a sequel is if they build it around the gag of the originals not being asked to return in new series set several decades later. "What do you mean they don't want us? We're the stars, right? Right? Come on, I've been stuck doing car commercials for the last 20 years!"

I love this movie. Incidentally, I'm watching it now to inaugurate my new 32" HDTV! :D

"By Grabthar's hammer... what a savings. "

Off topic: It's amazing how cheap the 32" and smaller flat screens are now.

My 5 year old 40" Sharp has developed dark streaks, and I've been putting off buying a new one to see what the prices will do. I'd like to have another one the same size (or larger!) but spend about a third or less of waht I paid for this one. I keep hoping that prices will continue to drop so I can get a new one around $200. Keeping my fingers crossed. The wife would like to have the 40" in the bedroom, hopefully to just watch soaps and Dr. Oz.

Sorry for the aside.

Now, back on topic.

Sorry to break as well, we just got a 42" Samsung 1080p for $299 at Best Buy.

It's not going off topic. We're discussing how awesome Galaxy Quest looks on our big screen TVs! :D

Actually, the NSEA Protector looks more like a figure flexing its muscles, as per this scene:

I think a sequel is way overdue.

Won't happen. Not with the same cast anyway.

Maybe a Galaxy Quest: The Next Generation could be fun, though.

Yeah, little chance of a sequel with the original cast. Too bad. But the "reboot" idea could be pretty funny. Probably not much chance of that, either.

IIRC, the Protector was deliberately designed to be the exact opposite of the Enterprise. Its registry number starts with NTE - "Not The Enterprise" - and it has curved warp nacelles and no saucer (unlike the Enterprise which has straight nacelles and a saucer).

Oh, and are there any actual Trek actors in this film (I haven't actually seen it) other than Matt Winston? He played Daniels on Enterprise and is one of the Thermians here.

Chris Pine is Peter Quincy Taggart! Christopher Eccleston is Dr. Lazarus! Katee Sackhoff is Tawny Madison!

Robin Sachs (General Sarris) was General Valen in VGR: "The Void." Wayne Pére (Lathe, one of Sarris's men) was Guill in VGR: "Random Thoughts." Heidi Swedberg (Brandon's mom) was the Cardassian dissident Rekelen in DS9: "Profit and Loss." Joel McKinnon Miller (Warrior Alien) was a voice actor in the Star Trek: Klingon video game.

I had to vote awesome. I haven't watched it in a while, but I don't see it ever not being awesome.
As for people wanting a sequel, they did do a comic book miniseries a few years ago. But it's out of print now, and based off of the reviews on Amazon wasn't very good.
There's also going to be an ongoing comic series from IDW starting later this month. I doesn't appear to be related to the first one, in this CBR interview with the writer they only refer to it as a sequel to the movie.
EDIT: Actually, I just checked the IDW website, and apparently the new comic series started in November, I just didn't realize that because I only do digital comics, and it's not available in that format.

I find Galaxy Quest to be overrated. It has an exceptional cast, to be sure -like the woefully underutilised talent of Missi Pyle - but the humour is flat, for the most part. I suspect that if you go to STAR TREK conventions, the "in-jokes" are more enjoyable, here and there, but there's no edge to it, at all. It's a little too cutesy, I guess and family-friendly, it seems like, I don't know ... It's got a lot of affection for its subject matter, that much is clear. Perhaps, too much love for its subject matter.

Hah, Win! Although personally, I'd go with someone else and maybe even someone a little younger than Pine to emphasize the joke. Could even picture Tim Allen's character crashing in on the set and confronting the director as a sort of cameo.

Yep, this. It could work really well. ANd I'd have the new cast dropped in the same situationa s the old, and the old guys have to fish them out of it. Big film, great fun.

Great movie. Surprised no one's mentioned the ripped uniform shirt yet, very Shatner.
