Funny 2012 Trick-or-Treat Stories...bring them here!

For the first time in years, Hubby was home for trick-or-treating, so he got to sit on his butt reading the paper while I popped up every time there was a knock at the door.

Our first group: two very cute, very small children. The kind you say, "How sweet!"

Our second group: about six kids, one of whom went right past me, into the house, over to the laptop I had been using (nothing but TrekBBS on it, of course), and looked at Hubby, who merely tilted down his paper and said "hi." I just turned and watched, listening to the parents cracking up and asking each other, "Did he just go in there?" Before they could start panicking that their angel was being kidnapped (yeah, you could hear it start in the mom's voice), the little one came right back past me and on to the parents. Without stopping for candy.

I gave a piece to the parent who came forward for it.

Anybody else have a good story?

I've got oodles of candy left. I bought several big bags at Target, and although we got plenty of kids, it started raining around 9 p.m.

We took our daughter trick-or-treating for the first time and it took some time to get her to understand that you don't go straight into the person's house!

The last time I personally trick-or-treated - this was 1979 - it was so damn cold and windy that I had to augment my Superman costume with a ski mask. :alienblush:

I have to say I do not miss trick-or-treating in a snowsuit. That's one of the nice things about living in a highrise. No snowsuit required.

I have friends living in Anchorage, and the tradition up there is to have an early Halloween, like around August or something, long before the snow moves in.

Eight years ago I moved back to Canada from England with the kids for a couple of years. My kids had never been trick-or-treating before. My daughter, then aged 7, was especially skeptical of the whole concept. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that people would give her candy just for knocking on their doors. After seeing all the houses on the street decorated, however, she warmed to the concept, and, after we'd visited less than half a dozen houses, declared that "this is easy!" I'll never forget the look of glee on her face.

My neighbor sat on his front porch with a big bowl of candy and a big stuffed spider next to him. when the kids reached for the candy in the dish, he pushed a button and the spider made a big jump next to the kids. His wife told him to not do that to the little ones so he only scared the older ones and boy, did they jump and scream! I had to go over and see what was going on, what with all the noise.

I used to do something similar. I would wear a holocaust cloak with a skull mask and skeletal gloves, then sit in a chair with a bowl of candy on a table next to me on the front porch. When kids approached I would sit very still to make them think I was just part of the display and just as they got close enough to reach for the candy I would reach over to the bowl and get it for them. Quite a few of them jumped pretty high. Of course for the younger ones I would give the gag away by moving around as they came in sight.
