Formula One Season 2009!

^Ah but in the dark they're so similar ;)

I apologise, I was actually going by someone else's knowledge about the KERS there ~ I will beat them over the head with a kipper.
Having watched the repeat of Hammond driving an F1 tonight on TopGear, I do appreciate their skill.

But I still can't understand why you all don't watch MotoGP instead :techman: ~ far more exciting:)

^^^ Well, if you don't watch F1 next year, you'll be missing out on this guy joining the sport:

Bruno Senna to make F1 Debut for Campos Meta

Meanwhile, it looks like rumours about Nico Rosberg being linked with engine manufacturer Mercedes appear to be strengthened following the announcement that he is leaving Williams at the end of the season.

And, sadly, there will NOT be a British GP at Donington Park, although TPTMBG are trying to bring back Silverstone for that purpose.

Anyway, currently watching the qualifying at the brand new Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi - complete with a tunnelled pit lane exit - which will be F1's first day-night race. Expect golden sunsets and Lens Flares™ aplenty. Maybe. :bolian:

Wow.

The season's over and yet F1 continues to come up with some stories.

Of course, let's not forget Sebastian Vettel's superb win in Abu Dhabi (gotta love that pit lane exit which passes underneath the track itself ) although the race itself was the standard marathon amid a stunning backdrop. Might have been more exciting had Lewis Hamilton not had those brake problems from the start... could have seen a great scrap between the two.

But quite a lot of news of late. Firstly, Toyota announce they're leaving F1 as of now - both as a team and as an engine manufacturer - and instead focusing on their car manufacturing business, as a result of the recession. This of course means that Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock, as well as promising new star Kamui Kobayashi (who was once again great in Abu Dhabi what with that move on a just-pitted Jenson Button as well as scoring three points) will all be looking for new drives.

Also, the news that Bridgestone will be leaving F1 after the 2010 season (with rumours of Pirelli taking up the mantle), and that Williams have announced their 2010 line-up: Rubens Barrichello will be alongside their current test driver, the 2009 GP2 champion Nico Hülkenberg, which of course means Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima will also be looking for drives. Mind you, with Rosberg heavily linked with Mercedes, he could well end up with either Brawn (most likely, effectively swapping with Barrichello) or McLaren.

With Toyota joining BMW and Honda in removing themselves from F1 entirely in the last 12 months, this leaves us with four engine manufacturers for 2010: Ferrari (also supplying Toro Rosso), Mercedes (supplying McLaren, Brawn GP and Force India), Renault (also supplying Red Bull [the team, not the drink] and another manufacturer thinking of pulling out of F1 in the wake of Toyota), and the welcome return of Cosworth, who will be supplying Williams as well as the four new teams (US F1, Campos, Lotus and Manor).

^ I'm looking forward to seeing how Rosberg does next year - Brawn or McLaren, either way it could be good!

I'm more interested in Button, seeing if he'll stick with Brawn or, as highly rumoured, will jump ship to McLaren. I hope he sticks with Brawn - if he goes to McLaren, I get the feeling he's going to have a tough, strained time with Hamilton somehow. Especially given how the Button-Barrichello rivalry developed during this season at Brawn.

Now Renault are talking about pulling out with immediate effect depending on what newspaper you read.

Might we return to a day of gentleman racers, teams run on a shoe string and talent, rather than money, being the order of the day?

Not a chance.

Cant believe that button is the new world champion, lets see if he can manage to keep his crown next year or will he stuggle like lewis did this year.

Assuming most can secure drives for 2010, we have four World Drivers Champions on the grid (Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Button) plus some race-winning nearly-champions (Massa, Barrichello, Vettel, Webber, Kubica) plus others who either know how to win (Kovalainen, Trulli) or have been threatening to do so for a while (Heidfeld, Rosberg, Glock, arguably Sutil - hmmm, they're all German ;)). Plus we have constructors who are either on a major high (Brawn, Red Bull) or are threatening to rise again (McLaren, Ferrari), plus a shaken-up grid for next year, with major teams out (Toyota, BMW) and new unknowns in (Campos, Lotus, US F1, Manor, plus the Cosworth engine - will any of them "do a Brawn" this year? Indeed, could we even see the return of Sauber?), drivers in odd places compared to the last year or so, and several new drivers (GP2 heroes Nico Hülkenberg and Bruno Senna [Lalli ;)] confirmed so far).

Since the retirement of Michael Schumacher, it has been tempting to say that the next season of F1 will be the closest yet - certainly, rather than the straight "Schumi vs. [insert driver here]" fights of the past, 2007 and 2008 were close battles between 3 or 4 drivers, and 2009, while the first half seemed arguably a one-sided anomaly due to drastic rules changes, saw some close battles between about 6 drivers or so, especially in the second half with the resurgence of Ferrari and McLaren. Although, as BAR-Honda proved several years ago, a good season one year doesn't necessarily mean next season is going to be better - it's all in the car development (as McLaren found to their cost this year), yet even teams claiming to be looking to the future like BMW tried to one year (thus putting paid to Kubica's title chances that year) can lag behind in the subsequent season.

Yet, next year, due to the new mix-up and the strengths and confidence of several winning teams and drivers, and the abolition of in-race refuelling and with no teams running KERS (even though it is still technically available in the rules), I genuinely believe things will be much closer still. Button will find it very hard to defend the title easily with all these new changes in the line-up.

At last! The return of true Silver Arrows Mercedes. We need to buy up all Brawn GP merchandise before it goes away.

Yep. Looks like an almost-certainty that Jenson Button will form an all-British line-up at McLaren alongside Lewis Hamilton, almost as certain as Nico Rosberg and perhaps Nick Heidfeld forming an all-German line-up at Mercedes - of course, now the former Brawn team, but it looks like still with Ross Brawn as team boss. Yet I can't help but feel Mercedes still have an eye for Seb Vettel...

If things are confirmed (soon) it will be interesting to see the two Brits alongside each other. I doubt they'll get on, though, as the team and the car are all geared towards Lewis's preferences it seems. A shame, though that an all-British line-up in a British-owned team might not see a home Grand Prix next year, if Silverstone keep hesitating...

Meanwhile, Lotus have signed someone... but they're not telling us who it is yet:

And Timo Glock has just been confirmed as lead driver for Manor GP, alongside debutant Lucas di Grassi. So it looks like both di Grassi and Senna will make their debuts next year after all. :bolian:

Or indeed having a sh*t. :bolian:

Well it is official. Kimi's off to rallying, and McLaren will unveil Button as Hamilton's new teammate.
