Fans Are Trying To Get Disney to Change Splash Mountain to a Moana or Princess and the Frog Ride

A petition has been started by Disney fans to get them to change Splash Mountain, which is based around the controversial movie Song of the South, to something based on either Moana or The Princess and The Frog. The 1946 live action/animated movie Song of the South has grown more and more controversial since it's original release due to the way that it portrays the Reconstruction era Southern United States, and it's African American characters.
I didn't realize until recently that Splash Mountain was based on Song of the South, and I was surprised that they hadn't already changed it by now.
When it comes to the two choices, I'd vote for Moana, just because I feel that Pacific Islander cultures like the ones in it, are pretty underrepresented in these kinds of things.

Removing the imagery seems a no-brainer since most people seem surprised to find out it's even connected to the movie. There doesn't seem to be too many people who care about it being attached to the movie, the opposition just seems opposed to making changes in general in response to BLM.

Apparently, it was already renamed from Zip-a-dee River Run to Splash Mountain when the movie Splash came out. At this point it's so iconic I would just keep the name since I think even fewer people connect it to the movie Splash.

I think it would work really well with Moana. Most of the film takes place at sea, fighting various monsters and the logs could easily be repainted to look a little more like her raft. Hei Hei could appear throughout the ride for comic relief. The big splash at the end could be a tidal wave of something. I know it takes years to redo a ride but it would be worth it.

Do they have any attractions for The Princess and The Frog or Moana at any of the Disney Parks?

At present, no. They did have a Tiana live show set on the riverboat, but that was several years back. In EPCOT they were in early construction for an outdoor 'Journey into Water' mini-park area starring Moana, but who knows if that'll survive the lockdown.

I had no idea splash mountain was based on something. I'm still pissed after all these years they got rid of Mr Toad's Wild Ride. You actually crash your car and wind up in hell in that ride!

Never payed much attention to the characters on Splash Mountain. They seemed out of place when I did.

The Disneyland version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is still in operation.

I think they took the woman being chased by a rapey pirate out of Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm looking forward to the spot for 45 being taken up by a silent bag of Cheetos at the next Hall of Presidents update. Or they can have a Closet of Impeached Presidents next door. Anything can happen.

The ride originally featured a woman with red hair was next in line to be sold off, but she was such a long time favorite, they promoted her to a pirate. She also is a live character that roams the park.

There were also three sets where two pirates were chasing two women and a third woman was chasing a pirate. I think they've changed them all three women and chasing the pirates. It's subtle trying to figure out who is chasing who.

They should just change it to the Black Panther ride because they had tons of waterfalls their. You know it would be kind of fun I would imagine if they sort of created Wakanda as a event kind of like the Star Wars thing. I know Marvel is not old school Disney stuff but the reason why they bought Star Wars, Marvel and the Pixar was to basically phase out the old stuff eventually anyways once it stopped being relevant to modern audiences.

I haven't been there since I was a kid long ago and don't remember any of the side stuff. Is it me or does that ride look creepy? The uncanny valley thing or something, it looks unsettling. I'd be curious what people think riding it, I think a lot of people would have to be around 40 or older to have even seen it (EDIT: Song of the South, that is...).
