Plot: (I'm just going with my own summary here, because I don't think an official one could do it justice)
Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh), owns a struggling laundry with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Kwan), and during a IRS audit, her husband's body is taken over by a different version of him from an alternate universe, who tells her that she is only person who can save the multiverse by an evil being known as Jobu Tupaki. He teacher her how to connect to her multiversal counterparts, so she can use their abilities to fight Jobu and their minions. Along the way she also gets to see their lives, and how things played out in worlds where she made different choices.

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed it, it's one of the crazies, weirdest movies I have ever seen. I really have to commend Daniels, because just when you think the movie has couldn't get any weirder, they throw something else at you.
The whole cast is absolutely outstanding, with Yeho, Kwan, and Hsu giving the best performances.

Spoiler: plot details

I was a little surprised they revealed Jobu was Evelyn's daughter Joy so quick after the set up, because it felt like they were setting up a big mystery. But once we got the reveal, it was quickly became clear that the whole movie was about the fact that Jobu was Joy.
We got some really fun multiverses here, with the Raccacooni, hot dog fingers, and rock universes being my favorite.
This had some pretty fun, crazy fight scenes, there aren't many martial arts movies where you see people fighting with fanny packs, and giant dildos.
The only minor issue I had was that I wasn't entire sure which universe we were in at the end. I think it was the one where none of the multiverse stuff happened, and the Kwans had their party.Rate

I saw it on Saturday and absolutely loved it. The film is the most wonderfully bonkers, reality-breaking, endearing adventure about a family trying to find love and purpose with each other. Every fan of science fiction and/or absurdist humor must watch this film. Cut from the same cloth as Terry Gilliam but weaved into something completely different. The whole cast is fantastic but Yeoh is truly amazing.

There are many ridiculous jokes but the most hysterical one was whenever Michelle Yeoh pretended she didn't know martial arts.

Yup! He got old, the bastard! But there are moments when his character exclaims with glee where he looks like Short Round all over again!

WTF did I just watch This movie was awesome. The cast is great, story is really cool, and is simply a whole lot of fun. I gotta watch it again.

I loved this movie and there might be another movie that comes along to topple it, but it's my favorite movie of the year so far. Probably the last two years.

Saw this a while back, and for me it totally failed to live up to the hype. I found it immediately forgettable.

It has gotten some rave reviews, though, so obviously a lot of people really like it.

I didn't get this movie at all. I liked the weirdness of it (And the scene with the Rocks had me cracking up for some reason) but I walked out of the theater wondering what I just watched.

Basically this generation's Joy Luck Club, but with science fiction thrown in. lol
I think for Asian Americans, the film captures the trauma of the immigrant experience perfectly - both for the immigrants themselves and their children - but in a manner that is so unexpected that it kind of transcends the more typical films of the genre.

I've never seen The Joy Luck Club either. I do think it showed how difficult life was for the family, but everything was so in your face that I feel like I should have gotten more out of the movie then I actually did.

Definitely a movie I have to watch again as I spent the first half of the movie figuring out what was going on--but it was entirely different than what I was expecting and I loved it. Ultimately a family story that does a great job of portraying the immigrant experience. The metaphor works so well showing the sense of displacement and difficulty in moving to a new culture where all your talents, personality and strengths need to be redefined in a new setting.

Yeah, I think it's because representations of the Chinese-American experience are pretty much rare and there's a truth to the movie that doesn't exist anywhere else.

The closest thing would be The Farewell, and funny enough they had wanted to get Awkwafina to play the daughter in this too, but this is very much a story about the immigrant experience rather than the first gen one.
