Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the ending?

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Yeah there were a few moments when the suits appear to do some fantastic, superhuman things, but for the majority of the time they appear just as awkward and impractical to move around in as the prop itself must have been. Even when the actors were simply walking around, you didn't get the sense that the suit was "aiding" them in any way; instead it was clear that the actors were having to power them completely by themselves. Which sort of hurt the illusion a bit I think.
For an in-universe explanation, you can simply assume they were providing most of the power during downtime in order to conserve battery power. Which was a major concern, as made evident by Rita stealing Cage's battery pack in one of the earlier time jumps, as well as each time they had to abandon their suits after extended heavy use.

I really enjoyed this movie and agree with the ending criticisms. Had they nailed the ending I think this would be in the modern pantheon of great science fiction action movies like district 9, minority report, etc. It had almost everything else, great effects, great concept, great action, a lot of fun clever details. Emily Blunt was great. It was certainly better than recent efforts like Elysium, Oblivion, and Transcendence.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Seeing this over the D-Day weekend gave it an added poignancy.

Agree with a lot of the comments already posted. And a joy to see the Paxton renaissance continue. Much as I enjoyed it though, I couldn't shake the many SF similarities (Troopers, Aliens, FF: Spirits Within, Mimics/Matrix Sentinels) and wish there'd been something really unique and original. But still a lot of fun. I did at one point wonder whether there'd been a Japanese film version considered and what that might have looked like (possibly less PG-13?).

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Excellent movie. I still can't explain the mechanics of the ending though. I've read everyone's explanations here and none of them quite do it for me

If they had just reset, then Cage told the military to bombard the Louvre, everything would have made perfect sense. It shouldn't already be dead in the new timeline. Everything should be reset. Why would the Omega's physical death carry over into the new timeline? Doesn't make sense. Unless its consciousness died when the "knowledge" of its mental death and that caused the explosion and not Cage's grenades. But that doesn't really make sense either...

Perhaps I'm giving the film makers WAY too much credit here, but while there were a lot of familiar visual tropes, I actually felt that helped root the movie in the same sense of deja vu that Cage must have felt from the timeloop.

By chanelling some very familar stereotypes from any number of alien invasion movies & video games and then regurgitating those back onto the screen, the viewer already feels like they know the plot/setting. The historical D-Day/WWII parallels just add to that sense of deja vu. We feel like we know some of the story already. And then the timeloop hits and so does Cage too.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

I really *really* enjoyed this movie. Can't wait to get it on DVD/BD. May check it out again this weekend with my parents who want to see it.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Too bad 'The Fault With Our Stars' is killing it. & Maleficent. :p

Haters didn't like Shailene Woodley as MJ! LOL.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Eh, it's not doing *too* terrible. It may at the very least break even.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

It is an interesting if repetitive movie at times and Emily Blunt is incredible, but yeah the ending is rather confusing maybe the DVD will explain it.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Why Tom Cruise signs on to projects where they have no clue how to market the movie is beyond me.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Or is it that Tom Cruise uses his Scientology marketing skills for the movies he is in?

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

I think the biggest problem is they plan too much on marketing the movies around Tom Cruise and, well, Tom Cruise's wackiness has probably really damaged his reputation the point that for many people he's not exactly a "must see based on him alone" leading man.

Now, for me, he's kinda coming back to that, but for some it could still just be too hard to look past the Scientology and jumping on Oprah's couch.

His name just isn't enough anymore to sell people on his movies. So maybe the marketing for his movies needs to focus more on the movie itself, it's story, etc. rather than, "Hey, another Tom Cruise movie! Remember liking him in anything he did back in the 1980s?"

The movie concept got me in the theater, it was enough for me to overlook Tom Cruise's insanity. But, I may be now coming around to the point where Tom Cruise may be enough to get me into the theater.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

For me, his name is just as effective. I dont worry too much about his private life. I enjoy all of his movies.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Cruise is a beast but when a Shailene Woodley movie beats him???

Ugh.

This movie has been positively received. Odd it will be third.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

On a personal level, I find Tom Cruise absolutely reprehensible, but that doesn't stop me from really enjoying his movies and looking forward to them.

I think they did a good job marketing this as a Tom Cruise big action war movie with very light SF elements. They show off the bad ass power armor to make us think of Iron Man, but they were very careful to avoid showing the aliens because that might turn some people off. Also, that "this is not the end" was really haunting and sticks in your memory.

It just came out this weekend and it's already made $140 mil of it's $178 mil budget back, so I think it's gonna do just fine.

I resist the notion that a sci fi action movie can be a classic if, like this movie (and unlike the ones you mentioned), it has absolutely nothing to say. On that note, Looper was a much finer film than this fluff.

Also, can we talk about the general a moment? There are nightmarish aliens laying waste to huge swaths of Europe, and a random female soldier goes to him, saying she experienced a time travel phenomenon, and he shuts her down. Fine. Then Cruise and she go back to him, and provide ample demonstration that what they're both saying is true. And this guy, who keeps their scientist friend's gizmo in his own personal safe, refuses to believe them? Huh?

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Yeah the general was ridiculous. His main concern seemed to be his hatred for PR people. Bad PR must have killed his wife or something.

Looper was a turd though, message or no.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

My brother was convincing me that the news report from the end is identical to the one from the beginning of the movie. As in, the circumstances leading to the beach landing and its outcome haven't changed. Anyone else had this impression?

No, they mention an explosion in Paris, and that the Mimics have stopped fighting. It was different from the beginning news clips.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow: fun movie but can someone please explain the end

Yeah, the General seemed ridiculous and over-the-top. I mean, Tom and Emily put on quite a presentation, mostly from the way Tom "predicted" things as/before they happened. And I'm not clear what the "harm" would have been in lending them device if it could lead to the war ending and preventing the massacre on the beach.

I wonder if in one of the loops between when he first started approaching the General and the final one he ever stuck around until after the beach massacre, popped into the General's office and said, "Told you so!"
