DS9 DVD Options

Having given up on DS9 HD, I went on amazon to buy the SD DVDs. In 2003 DS9 was released on 7 disc box set DVDs. If I'm not mistaken, in 2017 each season was rereleased on single disc editions. My question is whether anyone recommends the original 2003 DVD releases or the 2017 rereleases. I'm ready to buy my fave seasons and it's time DS9 has a home in my DVD library!

Single-disc editions? I think maybe something in the product description wasn't accurate. Twenty-something hours of standard-definition content can't fit on a single DVD.

Edit: I see an ebay listing that says it has 7 discs. Perhaps they fit into a more normal DVD case.

All the US DS9 DVDs have the same transfers and feature the same extras*. Buy whatever you can get cheapest, and avoid fakes. :)

*Not counting the retailer exclusives. Which can still be gotten on the PAL releases.

I think DS9 is available on all the streaming services if you want to save a buck.
. In worst quality than the DVD’s.

But the 2017 DVD’s used the same 2003 Paramount glass masters that were made for the 2003 released. I think the only quality improvement would’ve been the packaging. The 2003 sets used a thick plastic and most of mine have broken from the plastic splitting where it was bent to create corners.

If stored vertically, kept closed in their boxes, at low humidity and room temperature or cooler, the discs will last for decades before bit rot introduces distortions or ruins their ability to be played. If nothing else so heartwarming, also know that the glue used to press both layers in a dual-layer (8GB) disc will eventually dry out and the layers will separate. A bottle of Elmer's, or any brand of glue and regardless if they got "special help" from Mr. Ed to make it or not, isn't going to fix it either. :(

So go for the 2017 release unless the original releases offer something big with extras.

I’ve found that the 2004 Voyager DVD’s have had issues with disc rot, and I’ve stored them fine since I bought them 10 years ago. But the worst episode is “Endgame”, but I’ve got the ‘Fan Collectives’ so I haven’t sprung for the 2017 Season 7 release.

Armus, what region are you in the market for?

It's worth mentioning because the R1 DS9 full series set I got from Amazon was produced with such poor quality, I had to confront the seller about the legitimacy of the set. The packaging was so brittle they'd mostly busted apart despite the box being in perfect shape. It was not the same series of 6-disc "leaf" disc holders inside the two larger cases that I'd seen in unboxing videos. Instead inside were loose plates, 2 discs per, with extremely delicate plastic "binding' them all together like a book with an end of tape.

The smaller, S7 case looked much as it did in reviews I'd seen.

The printing of the case was another red flag - dull color and not a very sharp finish to the text. I just put the discs into another case so they wouldn't be ruined from the awful packaging and left the box on the shelf where it looks fine.

The discs do appear to be legit. Haven't encountered any skipping or errors and I'm halfway through, so I no longer suspect they are KOs. Maybe late production runs have resulted in cost-savings measures for the packaging and QA has been affected. Better to sully the cases than the discs. Anyone else encounter similar quality issues with a recently purchased R1 set?
