Does anyone care about Christmas anymore?

I used to decorate a little tree, but the past few years I've not done it. I live alone and the friends I have don't seem to have much spirit. As such I feel sapped to decorate my own little place.

If I lived closer to my parents I think it would be different. Sometimes the spirit grows when you see it reflected in others.

I certainly care about Christmas! It's a time of hope, that God cares that He came to earth in the most humble of ways and left it as criminal. It's truly amazing!

Well, I finally got round to putting up my tree, despite not feeling very Christmassy at first. And I've just watched Nigella preparing some ridiculously rich Christmassy food which got the juices flowing. As it were. So i guess I'm starting to feel a bit festive... :D

My tree is up:

You are a horrible disgusting man who should be locked in a bunker deep in the Earth and never allowed to leave.

I'll get the keys.

No man of Holdfast's advancing years can be blamed for how he reacts to Nigella.

I love making people happy by getting them stuff they want or need. So yes, I care about christmas though I prefer to spell is x-mas being a card-carrying atheist.

I'm afraid that isn't doing you much good. The Greek letter "X" or "chi" is a an abbreviation for "Christ" that dates back hundreds of years.

Truth has been spoken. Err...typed.

Thank you for the explanation! I have been wondering why it is X-Mas and why I've heard people refering to Christina Aguilera as Xtina.

I had always thought that generally, using just an X is simply to shorten the word "Christmas" instead of the "X" being shorthand for "Christ". To abbreviate the word most seemed to use "chi-rho". That is, the superimposing of the Greek capital letter rho over the Greek capital chi, since those are the first two letters in the Greek word for Christ.

I do still care about Christmas, now more than ever though the emphasis has changed. It's still exciting to open presents on Christmas Day, watch all of those favorite specials ("A Charlie Brown Christmas", "Miracle on 34th Street", "A Christmas Story", etc.) and so on. But after you become a parent things can change. I find more sheer joy in getting things for our kids, because I know they appreciate what they get no matter how few the items may be. This year, we all seem to be even more sensitive to it, because in the past week a very good friend passed away and another good friend was laid off. True, that can happen year around, but they take on a special poignancy this time of year.

None of what folks normally decry about Christmas stops us from focusing on the central theme: the incarnation and its significance. The other trappings and traditions still hold great meaning for us, though. Attending Christmas Eve service is exciting in its own right. Heh... this year my son & I are helping to direct parking traffic at our church, because thigns get "a little busy" that night. We're planning on using our Force FX lightsabers since one's green and the other is red. Ought to be good for some conversation don't you think?

I've not liked Christmas very much at all it seems to be all about buying things you cant really afford then waiting for the BIG credit card statement after it. bit's the hypocrisy of trying to be nice to people i never liked the rest of the year. it also brings out the asshole in people more this time of year everyone getting short tempered and a hell of a lot ruder.
though this year it feels different my other half she loves Christmas but i cant really get into it some how maybe I'm just bored with it.
doesn't help that where i work we have had the Christmas grotto up since ND November and all i hear every ruddy day is Christmas carols. ooh if i hear Rudolph the red nose reindeer again I'll probably scream or just fart on the cat:borg:.

Considering I've never celebrated Christmas and never intend to, I couldn't care less. Yall have fun though :)

I love Christmas and this one seems like it's going to be one of the best I've ever had. There's so much more festivity than there was the past couple of years and I actually feel excited.

I only have five people to buy gifts for, so I don't get too stressed over trying to find presents for a bunch of people. They all usually make wishlists anyway.

Christmas has certainly lost its luster. I'm grown up now, but have no family of my own. I live by myself and feel no reason to decorate my condo with trees or lights or anything - there's no one to enjoy them with. I think children definitely gives the holiday season something different. While I enjoy spending time with my family and eating good food, it seems like Christmas just becomes a big chore. Trying to figure out what gifts to buy everyone, then running out to the stores to buy them and then wrap them... it can be a hassle as well as a drain on the wallet. I guess my problem is that I don't feel any "magic" at Christmas anymore.
I wised up years ago to having a real tree in my house. I'd grown up with that all my life and continued the tradition after I got married. After the divorce, I bought my real tree from Lowes for a couple of years and then got fed up with the mess and the hassle of setting it up. Artificial trees were ridiculous expensive and looked like crap. Three years ago (maybe four), I'm in Wal Mart late night ~ December 20 and I find that the fiber optic trees were discounted from $69 to $29!! I couldn't load that think into the cart quick enough. It comes with two color wheels that throw the colors either "fast" or "slow". I love to let it run while the lights are out, watching TV and listening to the little motor whir as the colors change.

Other than that, I could care less about Christmas. :klingon:

OMG! I couldn't agree more about those fiber optic trees! Usually our Christmases are not that decorative at all..but this year I had the Christmas bug..I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a wreath to go on the door that lights up with white lights. Then I thought, well why not have a small tree? So I went to Wal-Mart and low and behold, I find a four inch fiber optic tree for $20!!! I also couldn't put that thing in my buggy fast enough either! I was SO excited! I couldn't wait to get it home and try it out..now if my damn cats won't stop eating the thing I'll be in good shape.

I love Christmas, despite not being religious.

While there are some people who seem to enjoy making others miserable this time a year, usually because they're unhappy themselves, in general I find that most people truly do try and get into the spirit of things regardless of their beliefs or background. And that's what it should be about, not quibbling over saying Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas or getting offended at holiday displays that don't conform to your specific beliefs.

It should be about accepting others, giving just for the sake of giving without expecting any more reward than seeing a smile on someone's face, and wishing others well. That's a universal concept that should hopefully appeal to everyone regardless of their beliefs.

Now I feel like Linus.
