Do you know the Scorpions?

I am preparing for a live performance by the rock band Scorpions in my hometown in a couple of hours and I was wondering:

It has been pointed out by the local media many times in the past how hugely successful this German rock band has been in Greece, implying that its success in Greece is not proportional to its success in the rest of the world.

I am not a huge fan myself but most of the people around me have always liked the Scorpions so it never occurred to me that maybe the are not as popular in other countries.

However, I find it hard to believe that songs like "Rock You Like a Hurricane", "Still Loving You", "Send me an Angel" etc have not become popular elsewhere.

So, my question is... do you know the Scorpions? Are they popular where you live?

The Scorpions were very popular in the U.S. in the 80s and early 90s. I had one of their records (yes, records) when I was in High School.
They were fine as far as metal bands go, but over the years my musical tastes have changed and I'm not much of a fan of that music anymore.

The Scorpions totally rock. I grew up listening to them. I'd love to see them in concert, but I probably won't get to do that since they're not coming to Omaha (that I'm aware of) and this is their last album (Sting in the Tail) and tour before they retire. :(

I remember somebody asked them why they never sing in German. The lead singer said something about how you can't put heavy metal music and the German language together, "all you get is grrrrch."

The Scorpions were very popular in the US in the 80's. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" was a big hit. Their popularity has waned over the years, mostly because their kind of music isn't as popular is it once was.

I saw them live in the mid-90's. They put on a good show.

They're popular enough to have their biggest hits played often on local radio. There was an orchestral version of them performing "Rock You Like A Hurricane", once. It blended with their original hard rock arrangement nicely.

They have never been a popular albums band in the UK, and they've only ever had one bonafide hit single and that was Wind of Change, which is a horrible horrible song.

That's really all people know of them over here, so no surprise that nobody buys their albums, although that song is really not typical of their overall output.

They are very well known, and at one time very popular. I have owned many of their recordings in various media over the years. If I were not married with children, I'd go to a concert. I'd go no matter what if Anvil opened for them.

They were somewhat popular in the early 80's and arount 1990 but they're mainly (and fortunately I should say) forgotten since except maybe for Still Loving You and Wind of Change.

The German language is perfect for metal indus :)

This thread made me want to listen to Scorpions'ex guitarist Michael Schenker :

I like it too. Was a hit in AUstralia. Aside form that, I was aware of them back inthe 70s/80s, but they were never big, not even middling here.

I'm not into Heavy Metal, but I remember them being popular in the 80s. The only song I really remember is "Rock You Like a Hurricane."

Anyway, this is more of a General Media Thread, so stand back and cover your eyes while I do the Magic Mod Hand Jive. Wheee-oooo.

umm, I saw 'em live a couple of times back in the 70's. IMNSHO, they like, hit their peak when they released their 'Lovedrive' album. they were the opening act for Pat Travers and Sammy Hagar when I saw 'em in '79. they were never the same after Michael Schenker left.

I think people know some of their big songs and if they grew up during the 80's would know who they are but I wouldn't say they've really held on to their popularity over the years in the US.

All the Scorpions albums have some great music, except possibly the first one Lonesome Crow.
That one was quite a bit different than anything else.

Sting In The Tail really evokes a lot of Fly To The Rainbow, In Trance & Blackout for me.
Probably the best full album since Savage Amusement.

Michael Schenker's work with the Scorpions (Lonesome Crow & a few songs on Lovedrive)
doesn't prepare you for his solo work. The solo stuff is almost always amazing.

^Schenker's solo stuff was really cool until that Robin McAuley clown showed up. the stuff Michael recorded with Graham Bonnett or Gary Barden on vocals is a lot better. Schenker did some really cool stuff with U.F.O. too.

I think it is very safe to say that Scorpions was one of the most popular heavy metal bands of the 80's here in the United States.

I wasn't born until the mid 80s but I recognized some of their songs from the radio. However, it wasn't until now that I could have told you the name of the band that performed them. They are the sorts of songs that you just "know" but aren't familiar with who made them or when they were made (for me at least and maybe other people my age).
