Do wasps eat wood?

Okay, a few minutes ago a wasp decided to sneak into my home. I have my window wide open now, so it can easily leave, but instead it seems utterly fascinated with my ceiling. Either it's munching on it or it is doing indecent things to it. Kinda hard to tell.

Doesn't look like it's got any inclination of leaving. Maybe I'll have to give up my living room to it. :(

It is preparing to attack. I think you should get the vacuum and launch a preemptive strike.

Thankfully it decided to show some mercy and leave. Right now it's probably sitting in its lair and rubbing its little feet together, satisfied that it managed to terrorize me.

Insects are so creepy! A few days ago there was a hornet or some such creature in my office at work. My brave co-worker managed to guide it out of the window - she was my hero of the day!

And lately there have been so many ladybugs around, it's making me wonder what they're up to as well.

Nature sucks!

^ Still, I seem to remember that they do eat wood. And if this one didn't eat, it was humping my ceiling. Freak!

I mean okay, if this was a rollercoaster...

I believe wasps build their nests out of paper, which they make by chewing wood fibre into a paper mache mulch.

^Well, it might have been one of those buggers.

Reckless little thief, I need my ceiling for myself, I'm not sharing!

Wasps are stupid. I had one hovering around the table while we had afternoon tea today. It eventually found the strawberry jam and started eating. Fair enough, I'm a generous man, I can share. And besides, I was using the lemon curd instead. ;)

But then it would fly off, zip around a bit, before finding the jam again and settling down to have another munch. Rinse and repeat a few more times. Can't the bugger just sit down & eat quietly like the rest of us?!

If a wasp had sat down to eat with me, I probably would have jumped out of my seat and ran inside!

It's OK. It knew if it stung me, I'd mortally wound its feelings with a biting retort.

Working my ass off one day... I'm in the assembly department lending a hand to complete a project.

A very large... something comes in through the vent and is making this awesome buzzing sound and banging the lights and diving at workers. Very distracting.

Lunch time comes around I'm eating at my station. Chicken-wads and ranch dressing. Giant flying "thing" circles me three times then PLOP lands in my ranch dressing.

Giant bumble-bee like thing with pincers and odd markings on it's back. Apparently it's a "saw fly" or something.

Near as I can figure it was dehydrated or hungry or something. Whatever. I took the container of ranch outside and set it by the door. Hour later I went back out to look and the giant "flying thing" was gone.

The correct term is wasp bike, I believe. It's made of paper and is rather beautiful. So they don't eat the wood they process it, the same way swallows use mud.
